How I would establish a positive learning environment by using grades as more of a positive reinforcement than a negative punishment. Instead of stating that a student is not being successful because they have repeatedly received the same grade, I would use the progress they make as a reinforcement. Helping build up a students as they grow. For example if a student receives a C three times but the percent increases from a 75% to a 77% to a 79%, I would celebrate the student fro making progress and growing academically.

I will establish a positive learning environment for my student in several ways. My number one priority is creating a relationship with my student and making them feel comfortable. I value mutual respect when it comes to student-teacher relationships and I want my student to know that I see them as more than just a student. I will create a student interest inventory to get to know my student and learn their interests. I will use this knowledge and include their interests in our tutoring activities.

Many students don't receive the positive reinforcement at home and hearing that from an educator would mean the world to the student. If your student feels more confident they will be more motivated to put in effort and get good grades.

I will reach their needs by providing firstly caring responses so firstly they know that they are not an issue or a problem in the class. Then next I will progress through the levels of RTI. in tutoring and from the students interest surveys many like to work in small groups or alone. So I will be able to put them in to smaller group instruction wether that is in the room with my self or an intervention specialist, or if they need it out side of the room in more one on one instruction or work time. This allows the students to receive the best support they can from my self and/or and intervention specialist. Also, i will add it many examples and visual displays of the work I am asking hem to do. My students have responded well to visual examples and their interest surveys show that. Lastly, I will allow the students a multimodal form of assignment, where they can be assessed in a way that best reflects their issues and specific needs

From my tutoring experience, I can use all the information I learned and include it in my future classroom. I have gathered skills and strategies on how to help my student with their literacy which will help students with similar problems. I plan on meeting the needs of my students by assessing their fluency, comprehension, and running records. With this knowledge I can implement strategies based on what they need to work on the most. If my student struggles with fluency, I will give the suggestion of acting like they are talking to a friend while reading out loud. This will help with volume, expression, smoothness, and phrasing. I will give them a lower reading level to start and then start challenging them with harder readings as they start improving. If my student struggles with comprehension, I will have my student conduct close readings and coding. I will have them read out loud, stopping after each paragraph to discuss what they thought or wondered and make sure they underline, circle, and star important parts and unfamiliar words. This will help later on when they are answering comprehension questions. I also think all of this can be completed in the classroom as a whole group, with one on one meetings every now and then to make sure my students are improving in their skills. Conducting read a louds and teaching how to do a close reading by showing them different coding skills can be a great whole class activity. This should help my students with some of their literacy needs just like my student in my tutoring sessions.

I think these are all great ideas! Telling your students that they are not the problem and that they just need more practice is key. You don't want your students to feel dumb ever. I also think conducting interest surveys is essential to getting to know your students and their literacy skills. Asking about their favorite genres or interests can help you implement their interests in the classroom as well. I also think multimodal assignments are very important to include to allow your students to have a voice in the classroom and choose the best way they are successful.

Hey Alana, I enjoyed reading your response. all of your descriptions for examples for helping the students practice and grow in their comprehension of the English language show a deeper want to help them achieve more and grow. I really enjoy the idea of reading out loud, because I know for many students that is their worst nightmare, reading in front of the class. But if it is more one on one, the setting is more relaxed and there is less attention from their peers so they will be less stressed and worried about making mistakes. This will also mean they are more receptive to the help you will provide. Also as a teacher, you will be able to give feedback while also not having to make sure the student will get embarrassed or hurt by your feedback. it builds on helping the student and not hurting them. it is a great idea. Awesome job

When working on the needs of my students, it's clear that many students are behind within their literacy, or if the student has come from different school districts that inhibit literacy, as seen with my student that struggles with literacy due to his last educator being nonchalant about his learning. I've come to understand that working with twenty-something students, I must work with each kid individually—which I know will be challenging, but encouraging, working on specific students' literacy will push for excellence. Using strategies like reading rulers, using phonic cards to enable visual learning, and multimodal learning to bring active engagement. It's important that challenges as poor literacy skills will be evident within the classroom, and sometimes I know it will be challenging working with every student to enable better literacy skills. It's important that I use modeling to engage students with literacy skills correctly if students have been mis-taught.
