Ever since I was a kid, fractions have been my weakest point in math. I never understood how to add fractions with two different denominators. Now that I know how to do this, teaching it is the new issue with fractions. I had trouble with them myself, so how am I supposed to teach them to students? One setback is that students learn in many different ways. In other subjects this is easy for me but with math, if I can't just explain how to add fractions then how will I teach them to their benefit?

Like with adding fractions, I also struggled with subtracting fractions because they are handled the same way but the equation is the inverse of addition. The setback with subtracting fractions is the same as with adding fractions. If I didn't fully understand them as a kid, then I am nervous to teach students about them because I am unsure of the best way to teach them these fractions.

Translating fractions to decimals, though simple now, used to trip me up because they weren't explained properly to me as a child. It took me a while to understand how numbers could be the same when they look completely different. A setback with this is how to explain it to children with visuals that will help them understand why they are equal to each other and what place value means.
