I never understood how to add fractions with two different denominators. Now that I know how to do this, teaching it is the new issue with fractions. I had trouble with them myself, so how am I supposed to teach them to students? One setback is that students learn in many different ways. The setback with subtracting fractions is the same as with adding fractions. It took me a while to understand how numbers could be the same when they look completely different.
