I thought this film was boring at first but then I realized that it was a different type of film, it was all about what the people were thinking during this time and how creepy it was. An example of this is when one of the protagonists killed a person and realized what he just did, also when there was silence and just the sound of grass but then suddenly they got shot at. Another thing that happens is when a guy pulls out the pin of a grenade instead of throwing it and dies, this shows how not everything went to plan and it was not always the enemy that was killing you. "The Thin Red Line" doesn't always show the action of the war but instead shows all of the other bad things whether that was philological damage, mishaps, or surprise ambushes.

In "Saving Private Ryan" I saw a bunch of gore (okay maybe not "a bunch" or "gore gore" but I've never seen injury and/or blood effects like that before) and uh yea wars are violent that's how it connects with the blood and guts.

And just all of these WWII movies, in general, made me think about how kids would play with soldier toys and pretend to work in the army when they probably don't have any idea how life-risking working in an army can be. It's not all fun and games. Not at all.

In 'Saving Private Ryan' two things really stood out to me. One was the part were the one guy walked across carrying half of his own entirely ripped off arm in the other hand and the way he just seemed so casual about it. Though, that does make sense because it could have been so much worse, but just the shock of him carrying his own bloody arm. The other thing was like this and was the brief shot of the guy laying on the beach with his guts exposed and pouring out onto the sand. I think that these really stand out because they really hammer home the reality of the battles people had to take part in and just how bad they were. Most of those people probably knew they were going die.
There was also the part where the camera moves along the coast line showing how the water had turned red from all the blood and there were still dead bodies laying there and the red water washing over them.

I'd always imagined Hitler's bunker as a grimy concrete cave with only a bed and a toilet, but it was actually nicer than my house. I also didn't know he had so many people down there with him. Saving Private Ryan was helpful because it showed what D-Day looked like but I preferred The Thin Red Line because it focused more on individuals rather than the battle as a whole

Out of the 2 I actually saw, I have more to say about "Downfall" rather than "The Thin Red Line". I thought the quick decent into despair in the bunker was very well paced and was depicted well, or at least I think so. I also think the segments with the young child at the start of the movie were used as a way to show what was happening above ground, while also being a good way to pace the decent into madness inside the bunker. The actor who played Hitler in the movie did an outstanding job as well, showing how near insane he was going at the realization that he was on the losing side of a finished war.

This scene helps give perspective on what WWII looked like to a non-soldier especially not seeing Hitler's egotistical (and evil) plans behind the scenes, with his high ambitions on winning war. He cared more about his ambitions than his people.

I like the movie with its good accuracy even though it may be based off a book they got the uniforms right for that period on Guadalcanal and how they portray the characters it was really well done and well made. the dialogue was pretty good along side the lines too.
-Tashi

Out of all the films we watched, i feel as if Saving Private Ryan was the most self stabbing out of all of the videos. the images were a lot more graphic than i was imagining, but it all pieced itself together. from the boats approaching the island to the men hiding behind the barriers, afraid to peek out in the likely chance of getting shot, all of it painted such a terrifyingly real image for us to take in and analyze. it was a movie where someone who doesnt really look into the deeper stuff could watch it and understand it just as much as someone who does look into the deeper stuff. it put a gory image of the truth into people brains. as much as i usually prefer deeper movies with more artistic meaning behind them, this one definitely stuck out to me the most out of the others.
-Amalea

The way he acted, completely nonsensically, and didn't care for anyone's life, including his, really showed how much he valued power over humanity. It was interesting to see how the people around him, who used to honor and praise him, realized that he was deranged.

I feel like watching Saving Private Ryan did a good job at showing how truly destructive and murdery and bloody and bad war was. The camerawork was often shaky and chaotic, which when accompanied by the several people dying in the background, their limbs being blown off and getting shot to death created an almost overwhelming experience. It reminds you how truly horrific war is. Now to briefly discuss the movie Downfall. It shows just how delusional Hitler and some of the people in the bunker were. Like, while in the bunker they decide to go upstairs and throw a party with dancing and music. There's more I wanted to say about this but I forgot, so farewell.

It taught me about Traudia, I didn't know about her until i watched this film.

Of all the flims we watched I think in Downfall it showed more of the bunker and how people were in there how there was other soilder & other women in there. I think it showed how the perspected was. It also showed how mad Hilter was when it seemed like nobody wanted to go along with his plan. That they should all leave & that his mistred wanted to stay with him. I like how they showed how the war was how choaotic it was, how everybody left, got there stuff & how the kid was fighing in the war and Hilter was proud of him for doing more than the other soilders where doing. Also when the women decide to have fun throw a party in the middle of the war but then there was lound bombs. The people didn't really worried about it. Then the bombs where thrown at the building it stared to rumble then they all left to go in a safer place. In Thin Red Line it showed how it really was when the men went to the island & attack the Japanese. When they all started to crawl in the grass the other people started to attack them they shot at them throw bombs at them some of the soilders went down & they trieed to save them but they counldn't do anything about. But the part where the guy pulls out a grenade but he pulled out the pin & didn't throw the grenade at them & then he dies. I think both of these flims shows of how the war was & what the soilders had to go through doing this & how risking it can be when your in the war. It showes so much action happing at each part of the films.

What really showed out to me in the Downfall film was that it really showed how Hitler ruled, commanded his soldiers, and what he thought about the casualties that would result in his attacks. The part where he lost it when he was told that his orders couldn't be met then started to storm off, some people still chose to follow with him even though they had overheard of what Hitler's motives were and they had pushed away the rumors that the other followers had about Hitler's delusional orders in the war. At the end, I understood how mad Hitler became at his last moments and it was pretty heartbreaking to see people giving up or still having a little bit of hope. I would also like to comment on the Thin Red Line film about how scary it would be to be in their positions and being told to push forward and attack knowing that they will be killed. Generally, movies like these really show how humans would act, feel, and think in situations even if they're a solider or their commandant.

I think Saving Private Ryan was my favorite movie to watch. Operation Overlord is a very interesting military operation, and was very successful considering how risky it was. The movie was very realistic and detailed. Every weapon sounded accurate and the M1 Garand made its iconic ping sound. The movie even included seemingly accurate reloading and clip/magazine sizes. Unlike many Hollywood films the guns didn't have seemingly infinite ammunition. It was very bloody too. I liked how they showed all the dead fish on the beach from the bullets which hit the water. I wish we could have watched the whole movie, since I know its a good one. I liked all the accurate props. The Germans had MG42s MP40s and Kar 98s. The Americans had M1 Thompsons, M1918 BARs, M1 Garands, M1903 Springfields, and even M1 Carbines. I liked how they showed the soldiers crying and praying on the landing craft before they hit the beach. It was also interesting to see the American soldiers kill the surrendered German soldiers, even though that's technically not allowed. It shows the desire for revenge the Americans felt after watching so many of their fellow countrymen die on the beaches. At the end of the invasion, after they took the beaches and bunkers, many soldiers adrenaline started to were off and they started crying. I think that shows how much war effects people. Overall, it was a really good movie. Of course the other two movies were great too! I think I'll watch all three of those movies in full sometime.

In downfall, I noticed that Hitler was slowly spiraling into insanity, and some of his friends (like Eva) were in denial of what was happening. When the bomb hit, Eva wanted to listen to swing, and try to block out that the inevitable was near. Those who came to their senses fell into breakdowns and sobbing fits (like Gerda), knowing it was too late.

Something I noticed was a common theme were the lights flickering. Hitler and his guards paid little to no notice of the power nearly going out a dozen times, but the other people did, which would sometimes trigger one's regretful sobbing fit and a sort of "realization" of the situation.

Another common theme was talking of dreams and delusions, and how the scene of one of the girls being drunk and breaking down, it really showed how delusional they were, and how some people realized this sick fantasy was coming to an end. After the bomb directly hit the party room, many people were sobbing and some were talking about how they need to get out of Berlin and run south, or that it was already too late for them.

One last thing about the film, I love the subtle foreshadowing, and how they play with the background noise and visual aspects, like the bombs that sound closer and closer, the lights flickering, the hum of machines and the noise of military boots on the concrete echoing onto depressed, cold, industrial tiled walls. Even the pipes crisscrossing the walls and ceiling and how the lights are industrial grade warehouse lights adds a subtle effect of a dismal, cold, tense and industrial-like place.

Downfall showed me a lot. The main thing I took away from it was how delusional Hitler still was even in his final days. He must have known somewhere in him that there wasn't anything he could do anymore to win the war, but if he did he refused to believe it. He was being told that different groups of soldiers are pinned down and can't make it to Berlin, or that they've been scattered, or have deserted, and Hitler doesn't listen. He still thinks there's something he can do, and just gets mad at his generals when he realizes the reinforcements aren't coming. He completely loses his grip on reality and is only driven by the pursuit of power. He said he'd rather shoot himself in the head than leave Berlin, which I think perfectly sums up how broken his brain was in his last days.

Saving Private Ryan was a very interesting film and it captured D-Day very well. It gave me a better idea of how intense and bloody the battles were, even though it was overly dramatic for the film. Even some veterans who went to see the movie in theaters had to leave because it reminded them too much of their time fighting in World War II. Many of the battles we have learned about so far were probably similar to this one. I want to learn more about D-Day before we finish the unit on World War II after watching Saving Private Ryan to give more context to this battle. It feels like we skipped over a lot of important details after the Greece part of the documentary which would also give D-Day and what we are learning about now more context. After watching this scene I now want to watch the rest of Saving Private Ryan. Did Germany actually have enough of a military advantage to mow down hundreds of US troops without any major losses or was it exaggerated for cinematic effect?

Downfall showed Hitler hiding in his bunker towards the end of the war, getting more and more delirious as his army was falling apart. He was pretty removed from the fighting and that was obvious as the movie went on and he insisted they could win as soon as the counterattack started. By the end, he was throwing a fit about how all his commanders and soldiers had failed him and Germany. Additionally, we saw how much he valued power that he was unwilling to evacuate the civilians in Berlin to save them because it would take extra energy. Anyone with these priorities is obviously delusional and we watched everyone around him realize this as the war was ending.

I thought that 'Downfall' was a great film that showed a much different perspective on this war than we see in other movies. I think that it showed Hitler's perspective without making him look like a good person, or justifying what he did. In Hitler's last days he was going insane, and you can clearly see that in the clip that we saw. This connects to what we have been learning about WWII because we usually see his big plans and how his actions affected the rest of the world but in this, we saw the smaller things and saw him slowly going insane. During his last days, he was talking about he didnt value the citizens' lives, and he started blaming the people around him for his failure.

This film was a pretty big contrast from Saving Private Ryan, instead of starting with a lot of action. It takes some time to get to the actual fighting in the movie. Instead of being more of an action movie, it's like a horror film, since it's a better fit for the type of war that was happening during island hopping. The first people seen that're dead are already killed, and we have no idea how they died, or where from. And they were brutalized, making the fear of the audience and for the soldiers get higher. The movie also shows how the people actually fighting take the orders from their commanders. With the commander yelling at the captain to push his men forward to take the bunkers, no matter the loss of life it takes. There were a few times that reminded me that it was a movie, one time where the cut to another scene was really bad and jarring. And another time where someone killed himself accidently for pulling the pin on his grenade. That can't happen, since you'd need to also press down on the lever(?), but that's just really nit-picky. Overall it's able to build up the suspense that horror movies get, but in a war film, that's pretty nice.

Saving Private Ryan was a well-thought-out film most notably for its d-day invasion scene. The unique approach Spielberg used to shoot this sequence was what made it so remarkable. I think this scene, in particular, helped changed the way many Americans look at World War II. I like the way Spielberg chose to bring out certain sounds and images while keeping the rest in the background so the viewer could have an even better understanding of what many soldiers felt during that day. By accentuating certain parts he was able to evoke more emotions in the viewer. Gruesome scenes with soldiers badly injured and limbs cut off were portrayed so casually which I think added to the tone. At the end and throughout the sequence, it cut to the red water, blood-stained boats, and the dead fish. Attention to detail like this is what made this film in particular that much more resonating.

It started off slow and slowly got better through out the segment that I watched. I feel like the movie really brought out what war is really like, i also got goosebumps when there was a guy in the middle of the grassy fields who was shot and felt like we was dying. Then one of the people went out to help him but the injured guy just wanted to be left there. I also noticed a lot of key points that I already learned in class that werr inouted into the war movie, for example when the Germans exploded a lot of bombs in the hills giving the illusion that the japs we’re getting “hell.” This caused the US to push in on the Japenese. This is one of the smartest things I’ve seen and brought a lot of perspective to the war. All in all this movie has been a 10/10 and I would love to finish it and make more connections from when we learned in class to the movie!

Downfall was an interesting movie because it gave us more insight on what Hitler was like. I've been realizing more and more that people dont really teach much about Hitler himself, its always just the things he did. In downfall we get to see his desperation and his madness, not just that he was a bad guy who killed Jews. he was genuinely loosing his mind. Also seeing people who were actually following him, and believing in him. Its crazy to see him so desperate to win the war that he just creates a reality in the bunker where he still has a chance at winning, and everyone around him just plays along. earlier in the year we watched that movie about how Hitler rose to power and the stark difference between the charming man who was shaking hands and kissing toddlers and the screeching sweaty old man whos yelling at people for doubting him in a dusty bunker is almost unbelievable. Im surprised that for all we learn about ww2, we never really see anything about Hitlers life throughout the war. Downfall provided an interesting perspective to ww2 that I hadn't thought much about.

D-Day was a pivotal day in World War II history and I felt that Saving Private Ryan captured the gore and the magnitude of the circumstances. One thing in particular about Saving Private Ryan that I didn't see in the other films (although we didn't see the entirety of The Thin Red Line or Downfall) was the consideration of the impact of war on the veterans in the future. At the beginning of the film they show a man and his family visiting the D-Day memorial in Normandy and it really put into perspective, the trauma that the soldiers went through and how it stayed with them throughout their whole lives. I felt like this film also really brought to light the strategy behind the strategy and bravery of the army. All in all, I thought it was a very impactful story and I think everyone should watch it at some point in society.

In Saving Private Ryan it shows the horror and fear the soldiers had at Normandy during D-Day. How the Nazis where able to plow down 10,000 allie solders with 4,414 confirmed dead. Also some features i did like and that Spielberg added was that the water on Normandy was red due to all the dead soldiers and that they had to use Bangers to destroy the Sea Wall to fight the rest of the Nazis.

It showed how scary it must have been for them when they were walking through the tall grass with no idea where the Japanese might be or what they might be plotting. Seeing the struggles they had to go through with disease and lack of food really opened my eyes to how difficult it was without medicine or easy food accessibility.

something beautiful.

anyway. I thought that Saving Privet Ryan cool because it was about D-day. I think D-Day was one of the greatest turning points in the war as It allowed the Us and the brits. to have a foot hold in Europe and take control from hitler. I thought the way the movie showed the war in a brutal way, the way that the people were instantly killed as they opened the doors. I think this helped as it showed a bit of D-day but I wish we had done more about it. The film, which is the only learning we have done of D-day, didn't even mention the paratroopers which were a huge part of the fight. and that's pretty interesting. I've spoken to a d-day vet and been to multipull museums and they were super interesting..

He was quite far from the fight, and it was obvious as the movie went on, and he claimed they could win once the counterattack began. In the end, he threw a fit about how all his commanders and soldiers failed him and Germany. He also found out how important he was to power and that he did not try to evacuate to save Berlin's citizens because of the extra energy it took.

I think that the film “Downfall” was the most interesting out of the 3 films that we watched. The two other films portrayed battles between the U.S. and the Nazis and the Japanese, while “Downfall” showed us the internal politics of the Nazis and Hitler. I think it was very interesting how we could see Hitler go delusional and not admit that he was losing to the Soviet Union. He started ordering soldiers to move that didn’t exist and calling his generals traitors because they couldn’t follow his orders. We could also see that he was getting more desperate and started using kids and civilians as soldiers. Seeing the bunker was also something I hadn’t seen before. I had originally thought it was smaller, but it seemed to be more intricate and better furnished. Overall, all 3 films are memorable and are relevant to WW2, but “Downfall” showed us things that we wouldn’t necessarily learn when learning about WW2.

I thought that this movie was a really well made and had many small details that really captured the feeling of d-day really well. Right at the start where the men were shot up as they were leaving the landing craft, never even exiting. Then those that lived jumped off the side, having to ditch equipment to not drown, and then shot up again on the beaches. The whole beach part was very impactful because of the sheer amount of losses sustained during the initial landings. After they went up the hill there were some czech soldiers that were surrendering and trying to tell them that they were czech and were forced to fight for the germans but the americans couldnt understand them and shot them. I think that the attention to detail of everything except for the mg tracers was amazing and Im probably going to watch the full movie sometime soon.

Hitler started ordering around armies that weren’t there and yelling at all his generals and telling them they were traitors. Overall downfall was a great look at hitlers craziness at the end of the war.

Downfall

I found this one the most interesting because it showed just how insane Hitler got by the end of the war. He refused to accept defeat and peace and was trying to move around troops that weren't there. When he was told that the troops weren't able to move because they weren't really alive, he threw a fit saying that everyone was a coward and they betrayed him. He only cared about how he took over Europe not caring about the civilians trying to escape to save their lives. I was never really taught about Hitler himself just about the misery he created. Seeing this toddler of a man in videos is a bit surreal. It felt like he wasn't real but seeing him talking to people and petting dogs and kissing women makes him so much more human in a weird way.

This version of Hitler shows an aging man slowly losing his sanity and respect of his officers. He didn't believe the German people mattered and his was directing armys that didnt exsist. I gained a little value from this, as I Absolutly loath Hitler. I know I shouldnt be happy in the face of his troubles, but I cant be bothered to care. I kinda wonder what happen to the germans after the war was lost though, as its still a country today.

I wonder if after coming home, soldiers ever think about the people they killed, or if they always see them as just "the enemy".

Saving Private Ryan

Compared to the other movies this one felt and looked the most realistic. As it also was one big moment extended out a bit, whereas 'Downfall' was telling a story over a couple days. With what we watched of 'Saving Private Ryan' sense it was focused on one big moment it forced the film to be more detailed and thought through. I saw all the pain and what was going through each of there minds. I felt almost as if I was there. Every prop, the boats, the crosses on the beach, or even the guns themselves all were perfect replica's. The directors and film makers went to extreme lengths to make this film so very realistic, matching the one and only photo taken during death day on Omaha beach. What really stood out to me was the strength some of the men had to continue fighting to the death, even if they'd lost a leg or their arm. This connects so greatly to what we've been learning in WWII as its a real reenactment of Death day at one of the beaches we tried to invade. I found value in watching and just learning about all of WWII as I enjoy history. It becomes even more fascinating when you know of or learn that a relative might have been in this war/ battle. And then to see what they would have saw by watching a movie, is just insane.

Seeing the people directly on the battlefield was different from anything we saw in schindler's list. It really shows how these soldiers in war are literally running out there accepting that they're gonna die. Once they started working together they were able to fight the japanese without instantly getting shot and they started making progress. In a lot of wars the soldiers seem like they just wanna go home but in this movie it seems like they wanna fight, like they are excited almost

I loved the cinematography in the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan. The emotion of following the soldiers really shows how brutal the start of the battle was. It really pulls the viewer in and makes them feel like they're a part of this war, and they have no where to go, but push forward or die. Seeing the visual connection of how brutal the German army was to battle, combined with the other films we watched that showed how it was in the citizen and Jewish perspective paints a clear picture of what the war was like in every perspectives. I think there was value in watching all of the movies. Each one of them brought a new perspective to the experiences in the war. I don't really have any questions, I'm just curious about the rest of the battle and what happened.

Films focus on the war and fighting part as the main focal point but this film didn’t do that, it was more of the physiological aspect. Another part that stood out to me was how Hitler was acting, they showed him fearful and delusional because he had just lost the war. We don’t really learn about what he was thinking or feeling and this film did a great job with showing us that part.

The U.S. and British armies landed at several different beaches under heavy fire from many varieties of guns and other weapons. The Germans had fairly advanced technology, and the U.S. was using outdated equipment from as far back as WWI, but the U.S. armies prevailed by having coordinated strategy and the element of surprise, as well as many more people.

D-Day was one of the most important day in the whole war for the US. In the past, US was fighting Japan after Pearl Harbor, so they didn’t have any interaction with trying to invade Germany. When the US made their first move, the flanks were very overconfident and undertrained. This was the first real battle that the US fought in and won. Once they invaded France, the war progressed a lot faster than it did before. World War 2 started in 1939 and D-Day didn’t happen until 1944. Even though it took a year after D-Day to end the war, it was the most progress that the Allied power were able to accomplish.
