Shel Silverstein

"Where the Sidewalk Ends" is a fan favorite when it comes to poetry. There are over 100 poems in this book along with drawings to match. These poems are full of curiosity and are so different in an amazing way.

I love how this book has many interesting scenarios and situations I could never imagine. All of these poems and drawings have a recognizable style. So when it comes to students showing that their voice can have a style that can stay consistent throughout multiple written stories.

Days with Frog and Toad

Arnold Lobel

In each Frog and Toad book, there are multiple stories broken up into chapters. In this book, the chapters in this book are "Tomorrow, The Kite, Shivers, The Hat, and Alone". My favorite in this book is "The Kite". In this story, frog and toad go out to fly a kite. Frog hold the kite while toad tries to get it in the wind. Toad keeps failing but frog tells him not to give up, even though the robins are making fun of them. After a couple of tries the kite finally flys so high, higher than the robins that were making fun of them.

The connection to teaching students about writing is that you need to keep on trying, it is ok to not succeed for the first couple of times writing, but what's most important is to continue trying to write.

Fancy Nancy "The 100th day of School"

Jane O'Connor

This book is about a girl named Nancy, in the story the 100th day of school is coming up and she is struggling to find 100 things to bring into her classroom. All her friends have good ideas but she can't seem to find anything. Then suddenly her family fish dies, she is very sad and mourns her fish. A couple of days later they were getting rid of the peddles in the fish bowl and she decided to use that as her 100 things.

This book has a lot of emotion in it and tones throughout it, from excitement to sadness, to worry, and lastly happiness. It would help students with using their emotion when it comes to voice in writing.

What Makes a Rainbow?

Betty Schwartz

This book was one of my childhood favorites and would be used for little kids. This story is about the different colors of the rainbow, and learning what things match with those colors. For example, for orange, they said "Orange, said Mrs. Fox, while swishing his orange tail. You need orange to make a rainbow" In the picture, there is Mr. Fox who is orange, oranges, and an orange tree.

In this story, the characteristic that makes it multimodel is that on the top of each page, a ribbon appears showing the color that they are going to talk about. Also, on the last page, it has a pop-out image of the rainbow completed with all the friends celebrating.

Fancy Nancy "Sees Stars"

By Jane O'Connor

In this Story, Fancy Nancy has a school field trip to the planetarium. She learns about planets and starts in school. Then Fancy Nancy goes home with her friend named Robin and they do a bunch of activities that have to do when they get home. Then when they try to go to the museum later that day there is a bunch of traffic and it's raining really badly. So they can't go to the planetarium but when they get home, everyone gets to look at the stars.

I believe that this is a very good book tat connects with organization because it has a sequence structure. It is a story that advances and changes through time. It would be easy for the students to make a timeline of events that happened in Fancy Nancys day.

Magic Tree house book: #1 Dinosaurs before Dark

By Mary Pope Osborne

This is a chapter book, that is my favorite series of all time. I felt like everyone could read them, it is a about a brother and sister that have a magic tree house that can take them to anytime in the past. In the first one, Jack wished he could see dinosaurs so they end up traveling to prehistoric time. Jack and Annie end up getting into some pretty dangerous situations and are trying to get back home. This is the baseline for most of the chapter books, just the places and times are different.

I would use this in a lesson by asking students to write about when and where, they would want to travel if they had a magic tree house. They would use three supporting facts to support their claim.

By Nancy Tilman

I feel like everyone should read this book. In the story it goes through multiple reasons why you belong on this planet. It talks about how you impact others, get through hard times, and how others see you. It's just a very good book for students to read so they feel like they belong and add to this world.

I feel like this helps students with their voices because it explains how important their voice is and how it impacts the world around them. I would also have them come up with ideas of how they impact the world around them.

Ocean: Sounds of the Wild

By Maurice Pledger

This book is about learning about the world's different oceans and learning about the marine life that calls it home. In this book, it makes sounds that correspond with the animals in the book. Each page has a bunch of animals to learn about. On every other page, there is an in-depth table that talks about each individual animal on the page before it.

If I were to do an activity with this, I would have the students, draw a marine animal and cut it out, put it in a stick, and then go around the classroom saying the sound the animal makes. They would share and pair what they created and what sound they were making.

By Audrey Wood

This book is one of my favorite math books and I still love this childhood book. This book is about 10 little fish swimming in the line and then different things pull the fish from the group until there is only one and then she falls in love and has 10 little fish of her own. In the book, it is like a poem and each stanza rhymes and every other stanza ends with a number.

For a writing activity, I could either have them practice rhyming by making poems of their own ideas, but they must rhyme, or I could have them write a story about numbers.

By Anne Schreiber

This is a really good book to learn about penguins. It talks about where they live, what they eat, what they do, and the different kinds of penguins. It also has a vocabulary called bird words, asks questions for understanding and has really good graphics. It has really good headers that are fun and easy for students to understand.

If I were to use this book to help with their organizations, I would have students make a bubble map with a big topic and then come up with different headers that connect to the topic and write bullet points of facts underneath that header.

The Day the Crayons Quit

By Drew Daywalt

This book is about how Duncan got a letter from his crayon explaining their feelings with him. Some crayons were feeling happy, embarrassed, frustrated, overworked, and lonely. He feels bad about his treatment toward them so he makes a beautiful artwork to make them feel better.

I think that this book is very good at explaining voice. The different letters in the crayons all have different feelings connected with them so the students can see examples of how to portray those feelings in writing. I would give them a prompt to write about how an object might feel towards them.
