“On average, children spend seven or more hours a day looking at a screen, and — in addition to displacing physical activity — that promotes other unhealthy behaviors,” says Dr. Daniel Pelzer, a pediatrician with The Iowa Clinic.

“For example, sitting in front of a TV or computer can increase snacking. Late-night screen time often interferes with sleep. Combined with physical inactivity, these behaviors promote childhood obesity and the health risks that come with it,” Dr. Pelzer says.

Structure is Good
But, it’s important that preschoolers participate in more structured physical exercise as opposed to simply playing on the playground to get even more benefits of physical exercise and brain activity. In March 2017, an article published in the Early Childhood Education journal announced that preschool-aged children were not meeting national physical activity recommendations. In the study, two groups of preschoolers were tested: those with free play and those who participated in a structure movement session. Preschoolers who participated in the movement sessions replaced free play with the structured physical activity two times a week. Results showed that those in the movement sessions had less sedentary behaviors.

Social and emotional development is just as important for a successful school experience as cognitive development. This development begins before the child ever sets foot in a classroom, and continues unabated throughout her entire academic career. Kindergarten is a particularly important period for this area of development; it's where the foundational skills for appropriate social behavior are learned and embedded. There are a few social skills that are particularly important for a successful transition to kindergarten.

Taking risks is fairly common in adolescence. Yet, risky behaviors can be associated with serious, long-term, and – in some cases – life-threatening consequences. This is especially the case when adolescents engage in more than one harmful behavior. The tendency for risky behaviors to co-occur has been well-studied. However, prevention efforts traditionally have taken a targeted approach, seeking to prevent a single risky behavior. A more powerful and costeffective approach may be to employ strategies designed to address factors associated with multiple risky behaviors. 1 This Research Brief brings together findings from developmental science and from rigorous program evaluations to identify seven actionable, feasible strategies and relevant programs that have been found to affect two or more risky behaviors. These strategies are to: Provide children and youth opportunities to build social and emotional competence; Provide children and youth with high quality education during early and middle childhood.
