Because of the pattern is very detailed, I had to find a way to balance the elements so pattern doesn't overpower the portrait. At first I just turned down the opacity of the background, but it just felt just like a portrait "slapped on" a background. This piece is a digital drawing of a self-portrait. The portrait is of me as a baby, when I lived In Thailand. The frame / background is inspired by Thai patterns that are commonly found in temples or my kind of traditional building. the pattern were inspired by a temple that I went to regularly called : Wat Sothorn. At first, I wanted to draw this portrait with gouache, but when we switched to virtual learning I had to try to find something new since I didn’t have the materials at home. I first decided to do this drawing digitally, but it didn't work because it was too time-consuming and I had to learn a lot of new methods to produce a decent result. The first step was to draw the face and figure out how much space was needed for the left side (mountains) and how much for right side (building). After having the face or at least the outline I would then work with the background. When all the outlines were done slowly I started working on the texture of the face the eyes, nose, mouth, etc.

(Intention) In this self-portrait, I wanted to show my cultural background through the elements of traditional clothes. The embroidered blouse with traditional motives “вишива́нка” (vyshyvanka) and “вінок” (vinok), the flower wreath, typically worn by girls or young women, are essential elements of the traditional costume. During this project, I also conducted some research to make sure that the elements such as flowers and colours of the ribbons were correct. While drawing the vinok “вінок” (vinok) I also took inspiration from “petrykivka” traditional drawing style shown in the first part of this presentation.

For me, an alter ego and the idealised vision we create of ourselves also forms a part of our Identity. The concept of an alter ego intrigued me, and made me wonder about mine. This project made me realise that the fascination behind one is in its secrecy: it's almost always a second identity that is being hidden from the outside world. As for the face, creating symmetry was important for me in order to create balance. I took inspiration from Pop art, keeping the lines simple and contrasting with width. I also decided to keep this drawing in black and white to maintain this goth theme. One of the challenges I faced during the process was the background, which consists of thin, increasing irregular circles. This background required a lot of time and effort because of the details. Another challenge for me was the hair: It took me a lot of time to decide on a way I would like to draw the waves because I was looking for a simple and bold way, which would contrast with the detailed background. The way I chose took a lot of ink and my ink pen dried up in the middle of colouring. (Intention) This piece is a representation of my alter ego. This portait represents a part of my Identity, showing a version of myself that is altered to differ from my normal and true original personality. In this version of myself, I remain completely unbothered with other's opinions, and therefore become able to express myself with confidence, with no limitations. My first concern was to how I wanted to represent my alter ego, and in which way I could portray this confident, intimidating version of myself. In this self-portrait, I am showing myself, the present me. However the background is kind of representing the past also present and future. In the portrait I am looking sideways, looking into the future. On the left side I drew mountains in the background, representing my country Slovakia. Slovakia is know for its beautiful nature and mountains, especially in my region. Growing in a small town made me experience something more bigger, like life in America. On the right side I drew skyscrapers. I am looking to the right looking ahead of me, into the future dream living in America and experiencing bigger things.
