Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) is the day when troops arrived in Texas to inform them that “in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” The news about the Emancipation Proclamation took 2 and a half years to get to Texas! When the 13 amendment was adopted in December of 1865, the slaves were officially free. In 1866, Texans celebrated the first annual Juneteenth, or as they once called it - "Jubilee Day".
