Throughout the story, they're are both rich and poor sides of the characters, Tom for instance is a wealthy man throught the story while George is a poor man. In spite of the fact there might be two sides to the characters, there is also two sides to the money. In the story, the characters want to travel to the East Coast for a better life and more money, in which they were wrong because they did not realize the "old money" and the "new money" differences. The main characters of the novel portray a stereotypical gender norm. Since The Great Gatsby takes place in the summer of 1922, white men held a great amount of social influence as they were seen as superior. It can be deduced that women did not hold much power when compared to men, but it did not stop the women from trying to “climb up the ladder.” Daisy showed that she was respected due to her partner, Tom. Jordan was seen as an independent character who would date multiple men and play golf. Myrtle, the wife of a poor car mechanic, had an affair with Tom. The novel portrayed these women at different social positions. Not only did the novel do this to the women but with the men as well. The main characters that were men had contrasted personalities. Tom was an athlete who had a lot of money and had an affair with Myrtle. He was very confident in himself and felt superior towards everyone. Gastby was a man who had “new money” and had multiple parties to show his lavish lifestyle to everyone. George was a car mechanic, not much money, and was considered a person who did not have a lot of power. Eckleburg on the billboard, colors, and Gatsby’s books. T.J. Eckleburg is a symbol because he may represent God looking over the valley of ashes. He may represent God because as he is looking over the valley of ashes it is as if he is looking down on and judging American society because of their poor decisions and lifestyle. There are many examples of where colors are acting as symbols. One big example of color symbolism is the color green which represents hope and life. The light that Gatsby sees at the other side of Daisy’s dock is green and he believes that if he gets it he will get back Daisy and live a happy life with her. Gatsby’s books take a big part in representing symbolism. Gatsby’s books represent his deceptive appearance because even though they are real he claims to have read them all but in truth he has not even opened up one of them. In the story Daisy, (who is married to Tom) is having an affair with Gatsby. Myrtle and Tom have an affair, which is proof that Daisy and Tom were both cheating in their relationship. Another marriage that has adultery would be Myrtle and George. I also chose to focus on one of the main characters, a man whose name is Jay Gatsby. His life happened in a way that, if put into a specific order,  the colors symbolize. At first, James Gatz is born into a poor family, which is where the blue comes in. He was very unhappy about being poor, but he wanted to make a change. The color green symbolizes hope, which is what he had; hope for a better life. The gold is used to represent the feeling of richness and successfulness that Jay Gatsby feels when he finally accomplishes the “American Dream.” However, at the end of the story the color blue can also be used to symbolize how miserable he was, even though he was extremely rich. Some characters are in search of getting revenge from past events, others finding happiness, basically, searching for what will bring them pride and relief at the end of the day. For example, Myrtle and George were in two completely different paths. Myrtle’s intentions were having wealth which involved her having an affair with Tom who is a wealthy man and just being selfish and not loyal to her companion. George on the other hand was focused on his responsibilities such as having a job, being religious, and just focusing on the better for him and Myrtle. Both have different perspectives and make their own decisions for their own well being. Not everyone was trying to just become successful, others had already been wealthy but were in search of what made them feel vulnerable, getting revenge, or being happy.

Women play a very crucial roles in ""The Great Gatsby." In this book women have a lot of unspoken control over the men. The main plot points in this book often take place in result of a womans actions. Evidence that prooves this is that the reason Gatsby throws the parties seen seveal times in the book is to win back Daisy. Without Daisy as character these parties never would have accured. This makes her, a woman, important to the story. In the end George shoots Gatsby because he thought he was having an affair with his wife, Mrytle, and that he killed her. If it was not for the death of Georges wife, Gatsby would have never been killed. A woman marrying rich would guarantee that they would be taken care of and so would their children. Daisy was unhappy with Tom, but it can be assumed she stayed with him because of the life she was guaranteed to have with him. A chance of her losing the status she had by being with Gatsby, may not have been worth her chance of being happy to her.

They were careless and many emotionless. Women began to wear more revealing clothes and had shorter hair. They partied a whole lot, which consisted of drinking, smoking, and 🤬. A good example of a flapper would be Jordan Baker. She is arrogant, irresponsible, and emotionless. Daisy Buchanan is another great example. She shows very little interest in her daughter. She also abandons love to have wealth with Tom Buchanan. She loves Gatsby, but his past is preventing her from choosing him. If he can’t financially handle her, then it is a big no. Some women were considered “gold diggers”. An example of a “gold digger”, would be Myrtle Wilson. She is attracted to men with power. She marries George Wilson because he has his own garage, he’s a mechanic. She thought that he was going to expand his business and become wealthy, he did not. This causes Myrtle to lose interest in George. She then seeks other men and has an affair with Tom Buchanan. Tom comes from a very rich family. He’s very self- observed. He comes from “old money” making him “better” than everyone else. He’s a racist and very hulking. Despite these things, Myrtle is attracted to his power and his wealth. There's a striking difference between new money and old money. So much so that they won't associate themselves with one another and the people with old money see themselves as higher up than the people with new money. Throughout the story Gatsby, who is a product of new money, is desperately trying to associate himself with the people of old money. In addition to the wealthy, there is the valley of ashes which is the area between west egg and east egg. It is the area where the middle and lower class people live. This just goes to show the strict difference between the economic classes.
