The angle of insolation is relatively small making the biome colder. The latitude range is 50 degrees to 70 degrees. Most of the taiga was once covered in glaciers which have left gouges and depressions forming valleys or rivers but there are also many mountain ranges. The average altitude of the biome is 3000'. The latitude and the altitude cause the biome to be colder.

The black spruce is able to survive the cold weather because of its layered twigs, waxy pine needles, and rough, thick bark. This also protects them from forest fires. This tree grows abundantly throughout the mountains and valleys. The black spruce is very tall and the twigs are scattered yet layered. The jack pine tree is relatively the same as the black spruce when it comes to the shape of the tree. It has waxy pine needles, scattered yet layered twigs and thick, rough bark all to protect it from the cold. The jack pine can grow in just about every soil because of it's specialized roots. But it grows relatively short. And prefers to be in shady areas.

The black bear is well adapted to it's environment. It's fur keeps it warm and protect it from the cold. The black bears claws help the bear climb trees and surround it's den. The bear also hibernates during the winter. The grey wolf has a woolly fur coat to provide insolation to keep it warm during the winter. The gray wolf large paws have fleshy pads and claws for traction and can spread to provide better support in the snow. Both the bear and the grey wolf have strong powerful jaws to bite through and eat frozen meat and bones.
