Rebecca's physical description isn't directly stated, but can be interpreted by her offspring. "I have 11 children, and I am 26 times a grandma, and I have seen them all through their silly seasons." (Miller, pg. 179) She is an elderly lady that states she is a grandma of her 11 children. This represents her older age. She represents a very caring and optimistic woman who looks out for others. She is highly respected in the community and her value of human life. " A child's spirit is like a child, you can never catch it by running after it; You must stand still, and for some, it will soon come back."(Miller, pg.179)

" By the time of the delusion, they and 300 acres, and their children were settled in separate homesteads within the same estate...Another suggestion to explain the systematic campaign against Rebecca, and inferentially against Francis, is the land war he fought with his neighbor, one of whom was a Putnam. " ( Miller, Pg. 178) Rebecca and Francis have had land disputes over the Putnam's based on jealousy and their success with renting the land. There were a lot of protests against the Tops-field-Nurse faction. Due to their upset over the Putnam's, they absented from the church.

(Miller, 237) Rebecca knows he will condemn himself and blesses him out of the lack of knowledge she has to understand his decisions. " Why, it is a lie, it is a lie; How may I damn myself? I cannot, I cannot. " (Miller, 237) Rebecca is astonished at John's decision is shocked about his confession.

Our group believes that the motive's behind our character's actions as being to have the community to realize that it wasn't witchcraft that creates poor Betty to fall sick. It was really the accidental consumption of partially dried grain that became moldy was why Betty was sick. She was that high of a position that, "... the general opinion of her character was so high that to explain how anyone dared cry her out for a witch ..."She didn't want to be part of the witchcraft situation at all and just wanted others to realize that Betty just ate some moldy grain. "Top it all, Mrs. Putnam- who is now staring at the bewitched child on the bed-soon accused Rebecca's spirit of "tempting her to iniquity,"...." Yet, people of the community didn't pay attention to her at all and her motives were just hidden under the bed and not to be noticed. "... Thomas Putnam's little daughter was the one who fell into a fit at the hearing and pointed to Rebecca as her attacker." Only until later in time was when the truth would be known but too late for the time of the Witch Trials to know. (Textual support quotes come from the stage directions on page 178 second column)
