We chose this topic because there were many effects on Ishmael when he had to kill people, and especially when he had to watch people he cared about die in front of him. In this book the character Ishmael is stuck in a war and has to constantly run, hide, or kill to survive and is this mentally and physically scared in the process.

Ishmael witnessing people dying and him killing people destroyed his mental state and how he acted and thought. Throughout the book and especially after he was forced into the rebel army he didn't know what was right and wrong because he was so confused because of all the chaos he went through. He hated the rebel army and what they did to innocent people but he was killing people too.

Also when Ishmael continued to watch people he cared about die he got more and more angry, and when he started killing people himself he didn't have any feeling when he was killing people he had no emotion. He was even sent to a mental hospital because he was so crazy and the drugs he took during the war made him worse.

The consequences that Ishmael is now going to face are dramatic. He may not be feeling them at the end of the novel because he is very happy that he is out of the war, but later on in life I believe that he is going to have PTSD from the experiences of killing innocent people and rebels.

Another consequence that I believe Ishmael is going to face is his connections between people. I say this because I think his connections will be poor and few. He has seen to many people and friends he likes be killed for nothing, having another friend in his life will make him feel like they are going to die so I can't be around them. That thinking will make Ishmael not want to have any relationships with people and friends.

One of the consequences of Ishmael fighting in the war is that he hasn't slept at all. Normally teenagers need around 8-9 hours of sleep to give the body the time it needs to rebuild the muscles and injuries and to grow. Ishmael didn’t get that due to the drugs he took making him not sleep. This means that he will have a lowered immune system, he will be more prone to injuries, he can have brain damage, and much more.

Looking on the bright side another consequence of Ishmael fighting in the war is how physically fit it made him. During the war he did lots of walking, running, sometimes swimming, and much more. In addition he had to carry around at least two guns wherever he went. The guns he was carrying (ak-47,g3) around collectively weight about 35 pounds and that was just the guns. He also carries around food and other supplies. You can only imagine how strong that made him.
