"It is, in point of fact, a difficult matter for man to realize the extreme importance of social discriminations which seem outwardly insignificant but which produce in woman moral and intellectual effects so profound that they appear to spring from her original nature" (Beauvoir 7). --> The flowers and blue sky represent beauty and freedom. I think they fit this quote because, even though everything looks peaceful, women still faced social expectations that limited them in ways people didn't always notice.

"His fate belongs to him.", "The struggle itself toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart." From The Myth of Sisyphus

The picture shows that the fate of one person is not determined in the beginning, they can choose their life when they are at a crossing road.

Also, there is a mountain there, and the road is very large, all above can make the person in the picture looks very small. In the real world, the world will not tell you how to live in the world because you are a very small part of it, you need to find your own meaning in the world.

“Hell is other people.”

— Sartre, No Exit

I chose this empty library room because even when a room is quiet, we are often thinking about how others see us. In No Exit, Sartre suggests that other people’s judgment can become a kind of prison. The empty room makes me think about loneliness and self-awareness.

"No signs are vouchsafed in this world." — Sartre, Existentialism Is a Humanism

Sartre wrote this about a student who asked him whether to leave his mother and go fight. Sartre's answer was that there wasn't one rule, no sign would decide it. You're free, so choose.

I took this photo at Fushimi Inari in Kyoto. It is thousands of torii gates, literally sacred signs, arranged into a path that seems to tell you where to go. But the corridor bends, and you can't see the end. The gates don't tell you anything. They just surround you.

Every torii was donated, mostly by rich families and companies, each with the donor's name carved into the post. It isn't a sign from above. It's a receipt.

So why do thousands of people think that's worth doing? Sartre would say nothing made it worth doing until they did it. We don't find value but invent it by choosing. The donors may say they were answering something holy, and that's the part meaningful to them.

I chose this photo of my rosary because I feel men have been using the Bible to raise themselves above all others since the time it was still being written. When men are to act to their families as God is to humanity, men become inherently cleaner, and thus, closer to God. Made in His image. "...in Genesis where Eve is depicted as made from what Bossuet called ‘a supernumerary bone’ of Adam." - S. de Beauvoir "The Second Sex"
