Artifact 5: Snapchat stores all of your photos in a secret database, and you can't normally see it

Even though Snapchat claims that photos you send are erased forever, they actually aren't. They are kept in a secret database on the app, which cannot be viewed through normal means.

This is relatable to 1984, because in the book there are many things which are not as they seem. An example of this is Winston's job at the ministry of truth, where he helps to rewrite parts of history, and change certain facts. This is an example of false truth, as Winston changes what the people living in the society accept as fact.

Orwell is warning us about this, because it is happening in our world today, in many ways.

When you purchase an iPhone. you always have to agree to a long list of terms and conditions as a part of it's privacy policy. By agreeing, you give Apple permission to monitor what you do on your phone, including your location, internet searches, and other activity.

This is very similar to 1984, which is filled with ways ways for the government to spy on people, and to invade their privacy. Only in this case, it's to monitor you, not to watch you through a television screen.

Orwell is warning us about this, because technology and surveillance is always improving, and that may lead to more issues about our privacy.

Artifact 3: Facebook Messenger steals your information, and can record you

Facebook Messenger, allows you to send messages your friends on Facebook.

However, what the app doesn't tell you, is that by downloading it, you are agreeing to letting the app access many parts of your phone. By just downloading and opening the app, Facebook Messenger is immediately allowed access to your camera, phone number, and your phone contacts as well. This is all done without even giving you an agreement to read. They can also record calls you make using the app.

In 1984, Winston is worried about thinking for himself, because he is always being watched. This app is another version of this.

We should all worry about technology being used to steal our information. It may lead to new ways for the government to spy on us.

Artifact 2: North Korea lies to everyone, and they've been doing it for years.

North Korea is a country that is famous for treating the people who live there very poorly. They don't have a way to access places outside of the Country, which leads them to believe what they are told by their leaders.

However, North Korea lies to the people who live there, as well as to the rest of the world. It claims that it has created many different things, such as a way to make people taller, or a cure for diseases, such as AIDS. These are all nothing but lies told by political figures. actions such as this lead the people who live there to be in a somewhat brainwashed state.

This is similar to 1984, as in the book, the civilians are mostly unaware of what the political power/Big Brother is really doing. Those who do know about the government are usually taken away and tortured, or they are vaporized.

We should all be careful about what we choose to believe, because we can never know if it is the truth or not.

This video describes many of North Korea's lies.

Artifact 1: Schools and the government ignore/don't teach about a genocide of Indians

Between 1846 and 1870, there was a giant decrease of the Indian population in California. This occurred due to diseases, as well starvation. This was the governments fault, as state officials caused a majority of these deaths.

However, even though this was an important historical event, the government, as well as some schools, refuse to acknowledge this as a genocide. This is incorrect, as this event fits perfectly under the definition of a genocide.

This is an example of how the government can change information, and how it can be different from what actually happened.

This is like 1984, when Winston uses a speakwrite to change events that have occurred. This is just another way that Orwell is warning us about the danger of False Truth.
