These devices are used to promote successful strategies such as increasing play, leisure, mobility, and communication skills. It has been suggested that with the use of technology in children with disabilities can help improve their participation and independence in meaningful occupations (Fairman, Bendixon, Youkin, & Krecko, 2016). The role of the occupational therapists is to consider improve developmental milestones, barriers in environments, performance factors, client factors, and specific activities. The OT will provide evaluation and assessments including activity analysis to indicate appropriate AT devices to recommend. Introducing AT devices will include education and intervention goals will focus on increase the use of the device effectively.

As stated by Gitlow and Merlo (2019), "Given the global access to everyday technology- cell phones in particular- developing apps and supports that use smartphone platforms are the forefront of innovative development in the area of mental health treatment." Occupational therapists may utilize both high and low tech assistive technology to assist clients with mental health disorders. For example it is found that individuals who schizophrenia often suffer from cognitive impairments including executive functioning, processing speeds, and memory and attention. It is suggested that applying technology is an effective and positive approach to help these individuals compensate for these deficits (Gitlow & Merlo, 2019).

Assistive technology is recommended to a client to increase their ability to complete a task and helps to improve their functional capacities (Mouldovan, 2016). These devices help to increase the accessibility to the environment and promote independence. The role of the OT will be to provide the client with appropriate evaluations and assessments for devices prior to making any recommendations. Education is a critical part of this process, suggested to be conducted during inpatient rehabilitation to both the client and their family (Mouldovan, 2016). Therapists work on interdisciplinary teams and assistive technology will be reinforced by all members. OT's may need to educate other team members on the purpose and proper use of the device to ensure that this is being reinforced.

As stated in the OTPF, health management and maintenance refers to, "developing, managing, and maintaining routines for health and wellness promotion, such as physical fitness, nutrition, decreased health risk behaviors, and medication routines" (AOTA, 2017). Assistive technology can be recommended that assist and improve a client's health.

Occupational therapists can work with individuals in workplaces by providing them with specialized assessments, interventions, and consultations regarding identifying and recommending AT (Yelverton, Martin, & Stephenson, 2018).  OT's have  been recognized as playing a crucial role in the transitions from into the workplace due to the collaborative nature with businesses, community, education, and work force development (Yelverton et al., 2018). By assisting clients with AT devices that meet their needs jobs in the work place are becoming more accessible to individuals in need (Yelverton et al., 2018).

This requires OTs to have knowledge regarding state and federal funding, insurance coverage, and available services and resources in the community. Advocacy is crucial for client's who may not be able to afford a device and insurance will not cover the cost. Therapists often are required to appeal denied insurance claims and write letters of necessity to justice the AT devices. While advocating for the client, it is important to consider the code of ethics and respect the client's rights and wants during this process. The core values outlined in the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics (2015) includes altruism, equality, freedom, justice, dignity, truth, and prudence (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2015). Therapists may evaluate the client factors, performance skills, and performance factors and make suggestions that they believe the client would benefit from. Although it is ultimately up to the client whether they would like to receive and use these devices. Therapists can provide resources to help educate the client on how to be a self advocate.
