"Speech has allowed the communication of ideas, enabling human beings to work together to build the impossible. Mankind's greatest achievements have come about by talking, and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn't have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future. With the technology at our disposal, the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking." (pg. 1)

This quote means to me how vital communication is to society. It can be both a blessing when it functions correctly, and incredibly detrimental when it doesn't . I also think it's really interesting that the speaker, Stephen Hawking, someone who had to work so hard to be able to communicate, is sharing his insights about this topic - I think it makes this quote that much more impactful.

I think it draws a distinction between speaking (one person, possibly zero listeners) and talking (multiple people engaging) Interesting that he mentions tech, because you could make the argument that with the tools at our disposal, we are actually doing less talking now than ever before

After reading the text - the word choice of "Build" is jumping out to me. I think there is definite irony in the forecast of what technology will create. It feels like we're talking less... but i think when we bring in new technology we also bring in grander expectations. Feeling like we're doing worse or not-enough might be unwarranted. We might in fact be talking more, but when compared to how much we could be talking now... it is considerably less.
