** LISTENING Is tourism harmful?

Great phrases to hear:

respect (v): to treat something with care

Disneyfication (n): turning something into artificial, not real, commercial environment

misbehave (v): to do something bad or inappropriate

wade (v): to walk in water that is not very deep

cruise (n): a journey on a large ship

monument (n): a structure that is built to honor a special person or event

sightseer (n): someone who visits interesting places

objective (n): a plan or aim to achieve something

clampdown/crack down (v): officially trying to stop or limit people doing something

cap (v): to restrict or limit

** SUMMARY CONTENT

The theme discussion centered on harmful effects of tourism on destinations and laws to clampdown tourists' misbehaving.

Rome's government issued a new rule with the objective to enhance tourists' awareness. The law would prevent the visitors who wading under Trevi Fountain and going around with bare-chested. Other law was also introduced in order to fine who drop litter in historic monuments.

In the other hand, due to the fact that cruise visitors to Bruges in Belgium did not spend money while they came, the authority enacted a regulation to cap the number of sightseers could dock. This will help Bruges to crack down on the Disneyfication of the city.

All of the above regulations force visitors to respect the places, the people where they visit, and more importantly, themselves.

I am going to talk about my road of memories in the University Village, which is located in Thủ Đức City. Even though I have gone through a hundred paths, this one still recalls my most beautiful days as a student.

I passed this road almost every early morning and late afternoon because this led to my university from dormitory. When I got on the bus, I usually chose a window seat on the right side to watch the sunrise and the mist still lingering on the grass blades. What a great way to start the day! I also miss the mornings which I rode myself so that I could take a full breath of the freshness in the air. At the end of the day, I was enchanted by the splendid sunset view on the horizon. It completely invigorated me after all day long.

** Response:

Below is my response to the question Is tourism destroying cities:

<https://voca.ro/1inSblksRyug>

Following the video, I agree with the statement that cities are damaged by tourism. Beyond the obvious benefit of economic development at destinations, tourism also affects cities in certain ways.

The first significant drawback is that tourism makes a city teeming with people. For instance, Venice has total number of visits up to 76 thousand people per day, while population of this city is only around 60 thousand.

As a result of overcrowding, the environment is spoiled with transportation emissions, garbage swamping and water depletion.

Another issue is tourists' bad behaviour. They bother people in charge and even ruin ancient monuments.

Finally, tourism leads to the rising prices of vacation rentals, entertainment services and any living costs. This makes local residents leave the land for an easier place to live.

To conclude, tourism is a double-edged sword. It helps the region's economy to grow; on the other hand, it also messes up the local life.
