Jordie was the only person Kaz had at the time, and after his death, Kaz was left all by himself. He learned to survive on his own in the streets of Ketterdam, one of the most dangerous cities in Kerch, and he grew up to be rutheless and cruel, or at least most people thought of him that way. He was called "Dirtyhands" as he never take off his gloves, and people suspect it was because what hideous thing hid under them.

I can't relate to Kaz because I wouldn't know how it was like or to experience what he went through, growing up alone without any family, having to earn money and survive in places where it was really likely for him to be beaten up. It is effective because this sentence gives us more details about a character's personality traits, the author included this piece of figurative language because it shows how Kaz is seen as to everyone. Geel is one of the Dregs (Kaz's crew) enemies and they encountered him at Fifth Harbor, there was when Kaz told him that he had Geel's wife held hostage where she is, and he used the siren passing by to convince Geel that it was true. Inej confronts Kaz about this, and he admits that he hadn't done what he said, but he knew Geel would believe him because of his reputation.

The reader starts to understand Kaz as a person and also what the people around him think about him, we know that they are all terrified of him and thinks he is monsterous based on Geel's reaction and Kaz's response.

It's more important to the set up of the story than the plot, because in the beginning we're still learning about each character and then we can follow them through the story.

I can relate to this similarily when I was choosing my electives for highschool next year, I took the classes that were mandatory, but there are so many options for electives, it made me think about what I wanted to do, and I didn't know. The mood or feeling is negative and dark, I feel as if this connotation was to foreshadow what would happen later on in the story.

I think the author added this phrase to warn the readers, it's foreshadowing in a way that something bad might happen to Miss Brown. It made the readers more curious as to what would happen next, so that way we want to read more. It's important to the plot because through this quote and some other aspects of this story we can tell that Inej doesn't know what she wants.

Throughout the story we see her have a character development, and she starts knowing what she wishes to do once the heist is over.

We can infer that she would be able to determine what she wants by the end of the book and take action towards it.

Raven's father left her mom and her when she was seven, and she's been bitter about him and his new daughter, Brooke, who was the 'reason' her dad left the family according to Raven. Even though Raven is already seventeen, she still remembers what it was like with her father, and doesn't like to associate with him or his new family now that he's out of her life.

This is a window for me because I haven't experienced any family drama so serious as this, and my parents aren't separated. But I feel like Raven, as a 17 year old, almost an adult was acting a little childish. I get that she's upset about her dad, but Brooke didn't do anything to her. I think the author included this to show how vividly Raven remembers her years with her dad in her life, and describing stars as polka dots shows she still recalls what she thought the sky looked like and the exact moment of enjoying it with her family.

this really proves Raven's point when she says she remembers everything so well before her dad left. because she can clearly state the places they've been to and what she remembers from it.

the mood or feeling is neither negative or positive in my opinion, I feel like this is more of the author just hinting that Raven's dad and Brooke are in a better financial situation than Brooke and her mom.

the author might have added it to develope Raven's bitterness towards Brooke and her dad. because of how he left, and he clearly doesn't have to same struggles Raven had with her mom and their problems.

Raven realized how wrong she was for being bitter towards Brooke, and how much she missed just because she was reluctant to reach out to Brooke, and we can infer from the end of the story that they will be spending more time together as sisters.

I can relate to this because I have a brother who I often have conflicts with. Sometime we're mad at each other and won't speak for days. the reader starts to understand the comparison between sisters and the moon, just as there are no such thing as a half moon - there's just a half of the moon we can't see, there are no such thing as half sisters.

it's important to the plot because this is the moment Raven and Brooke finally realizes what sisters are and what they are. it moves the plot forward by motivating characters to make decisions, like when Raven spoke up for Brooke when they got back at camp, and how the story ended on a good note with Raven and Brooke exchanging numbers.

Another section of dialogue between Nina, who is a Heartrender with the ability to control a person's interal organs, and Inej. The image on the top right shows their conversation. This piece of dialogue reveals important details about Kaz, and moves Inej to change her decisions and take action.

After they get the money they earned from this heist, the group will separate and Inej decided she wanted to leave the Dregs and Kaz to start a new life. Nina tells Inej about Kaz, about how the small details about his breath getting caught everytime he sees Inej, like he's never seen her before. Previously, Inej had struggled with her own feelings for Kaz, but she's finally decided that she was moving on from this part of her life as a spy, and she wasn't going to stay for him.

I think the author wants this part of the dialogue to motivate her to talk to Kaz before she decides if she'll leave. She uses this to defeat the Fjerdan soldiers and the other Grisha, but she looses control of herself because of this drug. Nina has been enemies with Fjerdans for the longest time, mainly because in Fjerda, Grisha or people with powers are seen as unnatural and witches, Fjerdans often hunt and slay Grisha just like Nina. Matthias tries to convince Nina to stop, he tells her that they were just educated to hate people like her, and that they could change. "We are all someone's monster", he says.

The reader starts to understand that both sides have been villainizing each other for all these years. But when Matthias and Nina began to learn and care about each other, it becomes clear that they aren't the monsters they thought the other were.

This reveals character's feelings and thoughts, from Matthia's point of view, but it also is a representation for all Fjerdans who have once feared Grisha.

The theme of this story is that everyone has a past, and you shouldn't assume or judge a person based on their behavior or condition, especially when they're someone close to you.

Throughout the story we see Terry trying to figure out what happened to his father. At the mall, instead of being supportive and worried about his father when he was crying, he felt embarrassed.

Later Terry finds out how bad it was for his father in the Vietnam, and why he was so affected by it. In Skin of the Sea, Simi is a daughter of Yemoja, and has been made into a mermaid serving as a Mami Wata, a mermaid. Throughout the story, Simi gets flashbacks and dreams of her life before she was a part of the sea. She is torn apart because she knows she belongs to the sea, but she wishes to know her life before and go back to her family. She wants to be human again, to experience feelings like love.

In the story, Kya, the main character lives in the Marsh with her parents and her huge family. She feels out of place since she is the youngest, and the closest sibling is her older brother who is still 7 years older than her. Her mother left one day and never came back, leaving her children with their abusive father. Later on, Kya's siblings left one by one, since they were old enough to take care of themselves. And soon Kya was alone with her father, at the age of six, she has to learn to take care of herself in this place.

Through this story, I realize how scary it is for Kya to have to do this alone, especially in such an isolated place that is dangerous. Kya is left alone in the marsh and isolated from others. She's always longed for family and friends, anyone who would fill this lonely world she lives in.

Through this window, I understand how isolation can do to a person. how desperate it can make them because they want contact with others so much. The main character of the story, Little Dog, is of Vietnam herritage and immigrated to the US with her mother. His family, specifically his mother and grandmother suffers from PTSD from war in Vietnam. And they have a hard time speaking English, making it difficult to live.

I can relate to Little Dog since I also am an Asian who moved to the US with my family at a young age. My family went through the same troubles (minus the war). Pip ended up buying the pills illegally from a drug dealer, and promising herself it will be the last time. Yet she kept going back to the pills whenever she had trouble. He doesn't have many friends and doesn't care to make any. He also doesn't share his feelings to anyone and mostly keeps to himself. He likes to be alone and wish that people understood that he actually enjoys his alone time.

I can relate to the part where Aristotle enjoys being on his own, because I also like being alone, but that doesn't mean I'm lonely. I enjoy talking and hanging out with others but I also value my alone time a lot. Their friendship almost falls apart, you can tell by Aristotle's narration that this event has changed him forever and he is not doing well physically or emotionally. Aristotle has a unique and interesting thought process, and I think he reacts differently (and worse)to situations than other people would.

In the first two books, Pip is seen as this loving girl who always spends time with her family and friends. She also started going out with Ravi, and he's been there for her throughout her times solving crimes.

But after the Stanley incident and putting her hardwork and a piece of her mind online, things start to get out of control. Pip doesn't share much with her family of what she is going through, and fakes her happiness to her friends and the doctors she sees. Although she is not isolating herself, she is keeping herself from showing the side of her that is suffering. The main character in this story, Olivia Priory, can't speak. It isn't addressed that she is mute or if something that has happened to her stopped her from being able to talk, but either way she hasn't been able to speak for her entire time at Merilance. She was isolated this way, she didn't have friends at the school and the other girls thought of her as a curse.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to be Olivia, unable to connect with others because of her inability to speak. Pip's past experiences with the local police in her town were not great. She has asked for help multiple times when she was investigating, but the Police either didn't take her seriously or didn't bother to help. This happened both with the Andie Bell and the Jamie Reynolds case.

Now, Pip was convinced by Ravi that she should go to the police for help after she discovered that she has a stalker. The officer she spoke to was reluctant to help, because the signs that Pip saw weren't specific and obvious enough, and he said there were nothing the police can do. She publicized her research and interviews to her podcast, AGGGTM. Jason Bell, who was a suspect of Pip's list, was Andie's father. Pip discovered of his actions, how he emotionally abused his ex wife and two daughters, including Andie. After the podcast, Jason was received lots of hate from people online and in town, being one of the most hated "characters" in Pip's investigation. His new wife also divorced him and he was forced to move back to the house where Andie Bell used to live. Becca Bell, the younger sister of Andie, is also in prison for something she did that Pip found in progress of solving the case.

In the beginning of this book, Pip has realized that she has her own stalker who might possibly want to end her life. She did reserach on the clues they left her, and connected the dots. Her stalker is the infamouse DT Killer, known for killing 4 women, whose faces he wrapped in duct tape for the police to find. Pip has held a grudge against Jason Bell after the Andie Bell case. She didn't like how he treated his own family. Now that she has found out about him being the DT Killer, who has been responsible for the death of four innocent women, she hated him with all her heart.

When Pip finally calmed down, she began to try to untie herself from the ropes and duck tape. She ended up being able to escape, but Jason came back after he left Pip alone. Pip ended up hitting Jason with an axe she found in the garage, and killed him.
