The Police are a public sector service. A public sector is ‘controlled or supported financially by the government.’ (Collins Dictionary, 2018). This sector is therefore run by the government and funded by them through taxes. They are there to provide a service to citizens in the UK. The Police are responsible for dealing with a wide range of situations, but their main responsibilities are to uphold the law and protect the public from harm. Some of these roles they are responsible for are; responding to emergency calls and incidents, keeping the peace, liaising and working with communities, investigate crimes and gathering evidence and statements, attending court and helping to provide the public advice on crime prevention and safety. (National Career Service, 2018). Introduction to Police Work states that the Police Service try to tackle crime through ‘reduce the number of crimes by prevention or deterrence. Solve crime by investigation. Reassure the public about crime by carrying out visible patrols in cities and towns.’ (Rogers and Lewis, 2007, p.10).

There are three main sectors within an economy. The tertiary, secondary and primary sector. Collins Dictionary has defined the tertiary sector as consisting of ‘industries which provide a service, such as transport and finance.’ (Collins Dictionary, 2018). The Police Service falls under the tertiary sector as it is providing a service to both the public and society by keeping them safe and upholding the law.
