A strong Byzantine flavour pervades the town. As you pass through the streets in the town centre through the narrow alleyways, you will come across temples and post-Byzantine buildings which testify to its rich history and its religious past. Of note is the Church of Panagia Parigoritissa (Our Lady of Consolation), which impresses with its innovative architectural style, and the churches of Agia Theodora, Agios Vasilios, and Agios Vasilios ‘tis Gefyras’ (of the famous Arta Bridge). The surrounding area is also home to many remarkable Byzantine and Post-Byzantine monuments.

Its name owes its name to the love of its inhabitants for horses. It is also known for the large number of storks it hosts every year. The inhabitants made sure to create ideal conditions for the storks, so they arrive in Filippiada every year and spend the summer in the town. The storks have become the symbol of Filippiada.

There is also a Byzantine church, of Agios Georgios, which was built in the 18th century. Every year, during the last three days of July, the village honors Nikolaos Skoufas with traditional dances.

YAVUZ SELIM PRIMARY SCHOOL HISTORY

Central Yavuz Selim Primary School started construction of a school building with 7 classrooms on an area of ​​2888 square meters in a field in Hoca Ömer District in 1968, as a result of the inadequacy of schools in the center due to the rapid urbanization process. Day by day, the neighborhood has grown, the environment has developed rapidly, and the number of school students has increased. In 1988, an additional building with 8 classrooms was built in the school garden. In addition to this additional building, 4 classrooms were added in 1994 and it was converted into a primary school in the 1994-1995 academic year. As a result of the growth of the neighborhood and the increase in the number of students day by day, the old 7-classroom building was demolished in 2000 and a three-storey building with 17 classrooms was built in the western part of the school garden. Today, there are 26 classrooms in two opposite buildings. On the first floor of the main building, there are administration rooms, a science laboratory, a BTS classroom and a library. There are computers in all administrative units and the library, including 2 teacher rooms, and all our computers have internet. There are smart boards and computers in all our classrooms.
