Summarizing the text is a strategy to identify the main idea and the important details that go with the main idea. A summary should be a short paragraph capturing the author's purpose. All students will be able to have a better understanding of the text by writing the main points in their own words.

I will teach this strategy through modeling the strategy after reading a book. Students will apply the strategy during reading workshop or after reading other texts. I will read their summary to assess their knowledge of writing an effective summary and identify if they are able to comprehend the text.

Graphic organizers are a story map or tool that uses visual symbols to help students gather their thoughts, understanding, and meaning of the text. Students benefit from using graphic organizers by recalling the information read, gathering their thoughts, and making connections with the text. This tool is beneficial for all students, especially because their are many graphic organizers allowing teachers to differentiate instruction.

This strategy will be modeled after reading a story. I will fill out the organizer with my class and discuss how the organizer is beneficial. Students will use the same organizer or a similar one focusing on the same skill. I will be able to examine the organizer to assess their comprehension and understanding of the use of the organizer.

Asking questions is a reading comprehension strategy to help students connect with the text and use their background knowledge.
This strategy will help students comprehend the text and make connections with the story. Students who develop this strategy will be able to comprehend all text more efficiently and become a better reader. All students will benefit from learning this strategy and having the skills to apply it when reading.

I will model for my students how to ask questions before reading the story. I have before reading dice that students enjoy using to ask and answer questions. I will be able to assess my students knowledge on the strategy through informal and formal observations. Also, the students will be expected to use a variety of organizers and KWL charts to ask and answer questions. Using these will allow me to formally assess my students skills on asking questions.

Picture walks allow students to preview the photos and text before reading. This helps students make predictions and activate their background knowledge to comprehend the text. All students will benefit from this strategy by engaging with the text before reading.

I will model a picture walk for my students so they are able to grasp the concept. Once they have grasped the concept, I will help guide them during the picture walk.

Say something is a strategy where students stop throughout the story and ask themselves questions. These questions will be predictions about what is coming next or how the story ends, clarifying their reading, asking questions, etc. All students will benefit from this strategy by becoming more cautious readers and making meaning of the text.

I will model this strategy for my students. Students will be given questions prompts to help them when applying the strategy during reading. This strategy will be assessed by informal observations and by retelling the story.

Journaling is a strategy that allows students to write their thoughts while reading. This can be done in a journal or on a post-it note. All students will benefit from this strategy by digging deeper into the text and stopping throughout the reading to write their thoughts. They will be able to go back through and reread their notes allowing them to connect and comprehend the text.

I will model this strategy through a mini-lesson. I will read a story and stop to journal throughout the story. Students will go apply the new skill learned during reading workshop. The strategy will be assessed by examining students notes and having students do a retelling of the story.
