Cognitively, I was challenged by the questions she would form for our quizzes. It caused the class to think critically. As a professor, Professor Ringo did a great job making connections and applying what we were learning to her experiences which helped with grasping the content. I currently do not have any suggestions.
-Jianna Hipolito Liwanag

Looking back on taking the Health Assessment course, I felt as though it tied all of the components of our other classes together. Information that was taught to us in Foundations, in our clinicals, and sometimes even Pharmacology benefited us to understand the learning in Health Assessment better. Health Assessment has shown me that caring for patients is not just about controlling their pain and healing them, but by evaluating each body system to ensure there are no abnormalities. A suggestion I have for the future is to have the material from lecture connect more with lab. Sometimes lecture would mention certain techniques, but the other class would not discuss the techniques.
Thank you so much Professor Ringo! Enjoy your Christmas Break.
-Trisha Lue

I enjoyed the lecture and lab components of health assessment. I feel that I developed many skills concerning how to conduct a full head-to-toe assessment on a patient that I did not possess before. I have already used these skills in the hospital environment to evaluate the health and functionality of each of my patient's body systems, and I felt competent doing so. My only suggestion would be to provide more consistency between lecture in lab in the ways that the tests are expected to be performed and what is considered to be important in the assessment of the patient, for the inconsistency that occasionally occurred between the two classes this semester caused some confusion.
Thanks Professor Ringo!
--Abigail Frederich

Reflecting on the health assessment course as a whole, I found it very helpful in terms of recalling information, implementing the skills I've learned in a hospital setting, and gaining confidence in my assessment abilities. Now that I have completed this course, it definitely was less scary than I thought it would be and I am proud of the progress that I've made so far. I think both the lab and lecture teachers prepared me well to preform assessments in the hospital and have taught me various tips and tricks that will guide me through nursing school and my career as a nurse. I have no further suggestions for improvements in the class other than communicating with the lab professors to establish a consistent assessment method as some skills that lab expected us to know were contradictory to those taught to us in lecture.
Thanks!
-Makena Roberts

This health assessment course was an interesting class and I learned a lot from it. I believe that having lecture and lab allowed me to better understand the information we were learning and to be able to apply it in a hospital setting. Thought the semester, I could see my health assessment skills improving, in class and in the hospital. In the beginning of the semester, I was not very confident performing my head to toe assessment however, by the end of the semester, I felt more comfortable performing it on my patient. Cognitively, having weekly quizzes and lab challenges encouraged me to study and know the information rather than learn and forget about it. A suggestion for the lecture and lab components would be to have the information correlate more between lecture and lab. At times we would learn information in lecture but it would not be relevant in lab or vice versa.
Thank you so much Professor Ringo! Happy Holidays!
-Lauryn Shek

I am so grateful to have taken a class so important for my nursing career and learn to apply it in a real hospital setting. My skills have grown immensely while applying them to my assigned patients during clinical and I was able to evaluate deeper, based on how focused the assessment was. I have grown cognitively while studying for weekly quizzes in both lecture and lab so that I will not forget the material. Professor Ringo did very well to help us understand how to test each body system and learn what abnormalities to look for. I have no suggestions.
Thank you!
- Elizabeth Korban

As I look back on taking this health assessment course, I learned how important it is to conduct a thorough head-to-toe assessment when identifying a plan of care for a patient. In addition to this, this class emphasized how it is critical to conduct a head-to-toe assessment on a patient to identify their medical needs for that specific day of care. This class also gave many great examples on what to look for in a patient with a specific disease during the physical assessment. Through the examples that were given, I felt that this allowed me to recall the information better. My overall health assessment skill and cognitive development has grown immensely after this course since I am able to conduct a thorough head-to-toe assessment on my patients while knowing what to specifically look for depending on the patients medical diagnosis.

Overall, I learned so much from lecture and lab but I did feel that some of the information did not fully overlap in terms of which techniques to use. Therefore, the suggestion that I have is to make sure that all of the information align with both lecture and lab so there are no confusions. I do not have any more suggestions.

Thank you, Professor Ringo!

Blessings,
Stephanie Ting

Initially I was very overwhelmed and felt there would be no way I would be able to perform the skills I now find easy. The lecture was helpful in terms of introducing the material, names, and basic practice. The lab furthered and expanded that knowledge by allowing me to practice the skills so I could master the content. By the end of the semester I was not only confident enough for my finals, but also very confident when performing the assessment in the clinical settings and recognizing the abnormal findings correlating to that patient’s illness. The class was enjoyable and expanded my skills overall.
-Madison Barr

Throughout this course, I have seen myself improve in test taking skills and my assessments of patients. I truly appreciated how in both lab and lecture the professors were passionate about helping us learn the material. I think this class was extremely beneficial and important for the nursing field. As I went to clinical each week, I felt more and more confident performing assessments on the patients I was given. I also enjoyed how my clinical and other classes were all tied in with this course. It was helpful to hear information repeated and clarified by other teachers so that we really soaked in the information given to us. One suggestion that I have for the course is better communication with lab and lecture professors. There were times that we were not clear on how to perform some assessments in lab because we were taught differently in lecture. I really enjoyed this class and I am grateful for this experience!
Thank you Professor Ringo, and have a wonderful Christmas!
-Bethany Hicks

As I practiced these skills more throughout the days I began to notice slow but steady growth in improvement. The skills learned in both, lab and lecture, were very helpful in the clinical setting since they guided me through the performance of a patient's head to toe assessment.

The following course, Health Assessment, has given me a fundamental set of skills that is imperative in every aspiring nurse. This was accomplished through the diligent guidance provided by both the lecture and lab instructor. The coexistence of both components of the course allows the students to not only learn the theoretical knowledge involved within the assessment of one's health in lecture; but also gives an opportuinity for such knowledge to be applied through the lab component of the class. The structure of the class creates a well-rounded amalgamation of an effective course that shows a dichotomy between theoretical knowledge and practical application yet enforces the coherent existence of the two as it is applied in the clinical setting. Through this course, student nurses learn that one must be able to crticially think and extract the theoretical knowledge we have acquired through the proper methodology when performing a health assessment. This is proven useful when crafting nursing diagnoses and creating plans of care in different scenarios. Overall, being able to accomplish this not only hones a foundational skill of a great nurse but also provides confidence for student nurses taking the class.
- Alex Joseph Moreno

Lab is what helped me feel more confident and more comfortable doing assessments on patients in the hospital. Throughout the semester, I saw how much easier it was for me to understand the information through lots of practice so that when I finally had to assess someone in the hospital, it was not as bad as I thought. As far as improvement, I wish that the information from lecture and lab aligned. Although we focused on a certain subject each week, it felt as if we were learning different ideas/aspects about each subject in lecture than lab which made it hard for me to know what information to study.

Health assessment was extremely helpful and applicable for our fundamentals semester. Learning about different systems every week and being at the clinical site allowed me to practice health assessment beyond the assigned lab time and on my patients. I think my overall health assessment skill is proficient, having a better understanding of how to distinguish from normal and abnormal findings. The lecture seemed to focus more on abnormal findings, while the lab portion focused more on what findings would usually be seen on a healthy patient. While it was helpful to learn about both, I wish there was a more interactive way to learn about the abnormal findings in both lab and lecture, such as doing more case studies throughout the course. There was great emphasis on theory and assessment techniques, which are important, but I hope the course could have been more interactive in practicing of how we could apply what we learn to the clinical site. Thank you for being part of our nursing journey!
-Gyllie Marie Gutierrez

This semester we have learned so much information. A majority of the information was from this class. My knowledge and skills of a simple health assessment has grown tremendously. I now feel comfortable giving regular assessments to patients in the hospital and I am very blessed to even have the opportunity to do that. When it comes to the class itself I felt socrative was a helpful study tool. However, I do feel the information in lab and lecture could have overlapped more. Sometimes we would discuss certain abnormalities in lecture and not in lab and vise versa.

Merry Christmas and thank you!

-Allison Irvine

This course has been very helpful in learning the practical skills that we were able to apply in the clinical setting. Throughout this course, I was able to learn the normal and abnormal aspects of the head-to-toe physical exam which was highly applicable when taking care of our patients during clinicals. In both lecture and lab, I was challenged to connect what we had learned in lecture to real life scenarios. Compared to when we first learned how to perform the head-to-toe assessment, I felt much more confident and less anxious about approaching a patient and actually performing the assessment on them. I think the lecture and lab corresponded well but at times, it was difficult studying for them at times because the information in one class would not align at times, in terms of what we would be tested on. Have an amazing Christmas break, and thank you so much for everything!!
-Esther Cho

I was able to utilize what I've learned from lecture and lab in the clinical setting, and that was super exciting. I enjoyed being able to further practice the skills in lab. From practicing in lab, I felt more comfortable in assessing patients in the hospital. I enjoyed seeing how I've grown and improved in my assessment skills as the semester went on. Being able to make connections to abnormal findings and what I've learned in class was so interesting. I would suggest that there be more guidance on what to study for the weekly quizzes in lecture. However overall, I felt that this course was both informative and challenging.
Thank you so much of for this opportunity!
-Abby Yamamoto

At the beginning, and even probably half way through, I thought there was no way I would be able to remember let alone complete a full head to toe assessment. However, just by trusting the course I am now confident in my ability to do just that. The only suggestions I would make is to have access to powerpoints for the lab portion of the course. I especially appreciated the testing help where the professor took time out of the test to stop, and explain to us a testing strategy. I had never had a teacher do that before and found it helpful not only in this class but all of my classes. The only suggestion I would have, is to make sure that the lab teachers know what you are lecturing on.
I enjoyed this course as it was a good introduction to learning the nursing process and the basic skills of how to be a great nurse. I feel highly competent in doing an assessment on my patients, and it's cool to see how much I have grown from my first head-to-toe assessment in the hospital to the last one. This course, both lab and lecture, taught me a lot about abnormal signs and symptoms in patients and connecting those to possible illness or diseases. For lab, I would suggest that the professor demonstrates exactly how the assessment should be performed, because often there is some confusion on the details of the assessment and the professor cannot watch all of the students practice at the same time. Thank you for a great semester!

The initial knowledge was learned in lecture, then applied in lab, then able to be practiced within the real clinical setting with actual patience. This class has taught me how to behave and act like a nurse. We learned which signs and symptoms to look out for when assessing for specific diseases, which taught us all the ability to critical think by being able to look at signs and symptoms and understand what could be the cause. I enjoyed that everything we learned was directly applied to either lab or the clinical setting. I greatly appreciated the new tips and tricks for testing that Professor Ringo would give to us while testing to improve our abilities, not only in the health assessment class but also all our other classes as well. One suggestion I could make is to better match the content between lab and lecture, to ensure that the students have at least heard the content once in lecture before beginning to do the assessments in lab. Overall this class provided a good foundation for assessments in clinicals and was very informative as the professors helped with learning and memorization a lot. Another suggestion I could make is that more time is spent practicing in lab so that the students can perfect the skills that they are learning.
- Destiny Ayala

Looking back at this semester, I have realized how this course has impacted my time as nursing student. I have acquired so much more knowledge and skill throughout this semester than I had anticipated and I couldn't be more thankful. In the class specifically, I learned how to properly assess patients to gain a full understanding of who they are, what issues they may have or susceptible to have, and their history. By analyzing the information they give us and what signs and symptoms we see in our physical exam, I have acquired the critical thinking skills to anticipate and identify what problems they have, and also what actions to take towards fixing them. I'm definitely more confident in my nursing abilities and I will use this throughout my whole education and career journey. One suggestion I would make for this class, however, is that lab and lecture were not always consistent with each other which made learning and testing the content more difficult. Otherwise, it was a great experience. Thank you for everything Professor Ringo. Blessings, and I hope you have a great holiday season.
-Paige Beedy

Health assessment has been favorite class so far this semester. The overall course was set at a good pace and I felt like I was able to keep up without feeling rushed. This class was very helpful and I am very glad it was put at the beginning of our journeys in the nursing program . It helped me understand the general processes to assess the human body as a whole. The only suggestion I would have is making sure the information given in lecture is also the same information given during lab time.
- R'Rian Ocampo

Looking back on my Health Assessment class, including our lab, I feel my skills have significantly increased. Prior to taking the class, I had no idea what to look for when assessing a patient, and now I can successfully assess and diagnosis difference conditions I know to look for. A suggestion I would have would be focusing the lecture topics more to what we will actually be applying in the hospital setting. The lab hands-on component was very helpful to familiarize myself with what we did learn in lecture.
-Madi Baer

Overall, I grew a lot over this semester in health assessment. The class helped me a lot with my patients because it gave me a foundation for all my examinations in the hospital. Now when I conduct an assessment on a patient I know the key signs and symptoms of disease to look for. Lab was very helpful because it gave me hands on experience so I could apply my knowledge correctly. The lab quizzes were also nice because they made sure I was retaining the information and it helped with the quizzes in lecture too. One suggestion that I would give for lecture is too teach the chapters in a more organized way, sometimes in class I would get very confused because we would jump between topics. This class was very helpful, thank you for a great glass this semester. -Jessica Green

Health assessment was a great start to nursing school. I enjoyed the laboratory portion of the class because it really helped the lecture component stick. It was very interesting learning about all of the different abnormalities we may run into while in the clinical setting. My growth in completing a health assessment over the semester has been tremendous because of the way the class is set up. The only suggestion I would make is to add more information to the lecture powerpoint. I felt that there was a lot more information covered in class than was on the powerpoint, which made it difficult to study if you did not get all of your notes done in class.
- Corey Winkle

Health assessment has been one of my favorite classes I have taken this semester. This course has helped me learn so much that I will able to take with me throughout my nursing career. The combination of the lecture and lab was a great balance to learn the information and be able to apply it and practice on classmates. This was very beneficial when being placed in the hospital. The hands on experience in lab helped me provide my patients with better care.
- Kiana Cenizal
