I have found that I try my hardest when I'm really working towards something that, well, matters. If my homework isn't graded and only counts for retakes, I'm skipping that homework and studying before tests.  But if homework will end up taking a more important role like 20% of your grade and the difference between an A or a C, then I'm doing the homework. Or let's say if you do all the work for 2 class periods in one day, you get blended as a reward and get to go home early tomorrow, I'm doing as much work as I can at lunch and finishing at home to get the reward of leaving school early.
