Sodapop is a kid who dropped out of school to help Ponyboy, his younger brother, with his education costs. Soda is motivated to help Pony with problems on the street and in the hood and tries to stop him from brawling with Darry and the Socs. Pony always argues with Darry and Soda doesn't like this so when Darry hand Pony argue Soda freaks out and runs away. Another example of Soda looking out for Pony is when Soda stays with him with Darry at the hospital. "Soda grinned. "Well, you did, so don't worry. We stayed with you so much that the doctor told us we were going to end up in the hospital ourselves if we didn't get some sleep"(136) Since Soda does that Pony looks up to him and views him as a role model.

                Soda desires Pony to be safe. Soda just put his hand on my shoulder. "Easy, Ponyboy. They ain't gonna hurt you no more"(8) Is a great example of Soda caring for Pony after he is beaten up. Also, Soda cared for Pony when he was released from the hospital and slept with Pony because he had tons of nightmares.

               Sodas flaws include not advocating for himself. Soda should tell Darry and Pony earlier it hurts to see them fight. Don't... Oh, you guys, why can't you..." He jumped up suddenly and bolted out the door. Darry and I were struck dumb"(148). If Soda advocated for himself this situation wouldn't happen. Also, if Soda would have told Sandy how he felt earlier maybe he would have broken up with her or not been as sad when he saw the letter he wrote to her resent and unopened. Also, Soda could have advocated for himself and others and could have stopped Darry and Sodas fighting earlier.

           Our personality test said that the person was Bold this is defiantly like Soda pop because he won't back down from a fight and is always Bold when it comes to talking to Darry and Pony. Soda is not scared of Darry like Pony. The test also said that Soda was Orginal that is also true with Soda. Soda has his own ways of doing things like when Soda chose to handle Pony with lots of care unlike Darry. "Darry did care about me, maybe as much as he cared about Soda, and because he cared he was trying too hard to make something of me"(84). The test also said Soda would be Direct which is true like when he tells Steve and makes fun of him tells it to him Directly.

Pony- The Hero: The reason why I think he is the hero because he is the main character and almost all of the climaxes and problems involve him like in this situation: S.E Hilton pg. 79 We pushed open the door to the back room and found four or five little kids, about eight years old or younger, huddled in a corner. One was screaming his head off, and Johnny yelled, "Shut up! We're goin' to get you out!" The kid looked surprised and quit hollering. I blinked myself--- Johnny wasn't behaving at all like his old self. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open the window and tossed out the nearest kid. I caught one quick look at his face; it was red marked from falling embers and sweat streaked, but he grinned at me. He wasn't scared either. That was the only time I can think of when I saw him without that defeated, suspicious look in his eyes. He looked like he was having the time of his life. I picked up a kid, and he promptly bit me, but I leaned out, the window and dropped him as gently as I could, being in a hurry like that. A crowd was there by that time. Dally was standing there, and when he saw me he screamed, "For Pete's sake, get outa there! That roofs gonna cave in any minute. Forget those blasted kids!" I didn't pay any attention, although pieces of the old roof were crashing down too close for comfort. I snatched up another kid, hoping he didn't bite, and dropped him without waiting to see if he landed okay or not. I was coughing so hard I could hardly stand up, and I wished I had time to take off Dally's jacket. It was hot. We dropped the last of the kids out as the front of the church started to crumble. Johnny shoved me toward the window. "Get out!"
=======================================================
Darry- The Confidant: I think this because he helps develop Ponyboy. He makes Pony learn about how he can be more than a hood if he continues his education.
=======================================================
Dally-The Hotshot: Dally is always taking risks and living on the edge. as seen in the book S.E. Hilton 19 wouldn't have felt so embarrassed if they had been greasy girls--- I might even have helped old Dallas. But those two girls weren't our kind. They were tuff-looking girls--- dressed sharp and really good-looking. They looked about sixteen or seventeen. One had short dark hair, and the other had long red hair. The redhead was getting mad, or scared. She sat up straight and she was chewing hard on her gum. The other one pretended not to hear Dally. Dally was getting impatient. He put his feet up on the back of the redhead's chair, winked at me, and beat his own record for saying something dirty. She turned around and gave him a cool stare. "Take your feet off my chair and shut your trap."
=======================================================
Johnny-The Reluctant Hero : I think he is the reluctant hero. The reason I think this is because he is very shy but he comes out of his shell in big moments. Textual evidence for this is at S.E Hilton pg. 22 "Dally wiped the Coke off his face with his sleeve and smiled dangerously. If I had been Cherry I would have beat it out of there. I knew that smile. "Fiery, huh? Well, that's the way I like 'em." He started to put his arm around her, but Johnny reached over and stopped him. "Leave her alone, Dally." "Huh?" Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny couldn't say "Boo" to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, "You heard me. Leave her alone."
========================================================
Soda- The Foil: The reason why I think that he is the foil is because he helps develop Darry. In the worst moments he creates peace- "Soda was fiddling with some dead grass. "I mean, I can't take sides. It'd be a lot easier if I could, but I see both sides. Darry yells too much and tries too hard and takes everything too serious, and Ponyboy, you don't think enough, you don't realize all Darry's The Outsiders,"S.E."Hinton 150 giving up just to give you a chance he missed out on. He could have stuck you in a home somewhere and worked his way through college. Ponyboy, I'm telling you the truth. I dropped out because I'm dumb. I really did try in school, but you saw my grades. Look, I'm happy working in a gas station with cars. You'd never be happy doing something like that. And Darry, you ought to try to understand him more, and quit bugging him about every little mistake he makes. He feels things differently than you do." He gave us a pleading look. "Golly, you two, it's bad enough having to listen to it, but when you start trying to get me to take sides..." Tears welled up in his eyes. "We're all we've got left. We ought to be able to stick together against everything. If we don't have each other, we don't have anything. If you don't have anything, you end up like Dallas... and I don't mean dead, either. I mean like he was before. And that's worse than dead. Please"--- he wiped his eyes on his arm--- "don't fight anymore." Darry looked real worried. I suddenly realized that Darry was
========================================================
Randy-The Peacemaker: Randy was the peacemaker because he at least attempted to end the conflict between the socs and the greasers. He said in the story S.E. Hilton 98. "And tonight... people get hurt in rumbles, maybe killed. I'm sick of it because it doesn't do any good. You can't win, you know that, don't you?" And when I remained silent he went on: "You can't win, even if you whip us. You'll still be where you were before--- at the bottom. And we'll still be the lucky ones with all the breaks. So it doesn't do any good, the fighting and the killing. It doesn't prove a thing. We'll forget it if you win, or if you don't. Greasers will still be greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it's the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs..."
========================================================

Soda is a Life Jacket. Soda is a life jacket because whenever Pony is falling and sinking into the wrath of the hood Soda and Darry will save him and be his life jacket. "Sodapop came loping back. By then I had figured that all the noise I had heard was the gang coming to rescue me. He dropped down beside me, examining my head. "You got cut up a little, huh, Ponyboy?""(7) Soda immediatly cared for Pony and became his life jacket. Also Soda when Pony was out of the hospital and after the rumble Pony was beat up but Soda was the life jacket while Darry cared for Pony Soda was out at work and helped with financial issues.

Confict- The conflicts in the Outsiders impact the story heavily with the characters even changing because of it. It was used in many ways that you don't notice when you are reading but notice later.
Integral Setting-The setting is one of the most important parts of the book. If the setting was in the soc's area then the story would change completely. It is used to add effection to the characters who live in the hood
