The gist: For this assignment, you will decide what grade you want to receive by following through on this commitment. Each time you sit down to read your summer reading books, both the text you selected from my room and the book you choose to read afterward, you will log your time by describing what you worked on and reflecting on your process; and at the end of the assignment, you will average it out. As everyone reads at a different pace, and you are free to use your time however you'd like this summer, there is no set amount of time expected for this assignment. In future assignments, you will be asked to reach a minimum number of hours per week outside of class using the labor log, so consider this your practice.  If you log all of your reading accurately and diligently, your first grade in this class will be an A.

This will be the first major writing assignment.  It is relatively straightforward.  The point is to think very deeply about the ways differences – cultural, political, gender, sexuality, class, etc. – manifest within and across communities.  This doesn’t mean simply valorizing difference for its own sake;  instead, you will think critically about the ways differences manifest in terms of your own experiences
