Reflection on: I’m in Love with Myself: The Age of Digital Narcissism
This article really pinpoints on the subject of my research. Trying to get more insight and also trying to find more balance between our “true self” and our “digital self”, which we represent on social media. As social media influencer I have created an alter ego. Who is confident, doesn’t know insecurities or less brighter moments while in fact my ‘true self” isn’t that confident or secure at all. I spend most of my time sharing my content online to my followers. I never asked questions upon our behaviour on social media and I also never asked question about my own behaviour on these social media platforms. Until something began to shift when I began to feel unhappy with not getting “enough” likes. This article explains it all; creating a persona, getting validation, filtering out the bad and focusing on the good. Are we in our daily like in “true” to ourselves or is all about the curation in life. This resonates with the theory of Erving Goffman. He writes about the fact that we as humans tend to change the role we are in our day to day life. He writes about that if we are interacting with others we tend to behave differently ten behaving from within, from our true self. There is, according to his impression theory, a dichotomy between these roles. A role in which we are our true self and our public role. With the invention of the internet, also the invention of social media, something happened.
