Also working as Psychology he knew new people and studied his conditions, this was also an influence for his writing. And these trivial events were the ones that inspired his writing, “Flowers for Algernon”. Sadly in 2014 he died at his house in Florida.

This procedure had already been performed on a laboratory mouse, Algernon, with remarkable results. Charlie will be the first human subject.

In a series of progress reports, Charlie documents everything that happens to him. As Charlie's intelligence increases to a genius level, the reader not only reads about the changes from Charlie's viewpoint, but also sees the change evidenced in Charlie's writing ability. This jump in intelligence is not necessarily a good thing, however.

One important theme in Flowers for Algernon is friendship. Charlie's baker friends - Gimpy, Frank and Joe - are ideal subjects to study the perception of friendship. Before the surgery, these people were Charlie's best friends. He enjoys their company and looks forward to spending time with them. After the operation, Charlie was able to see their relationship in a different light and realized that the men were not friends. They not only make fun of him, but often use him just for their own amusement. When he realizes this, their friendship ends.

https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature/f/flowers-for-algernon/critical-essays/themes-in-flowers-for-algernon

"Flowers for Algernon" is about Charlie, a guy with learning problems (MENTAL RETARDATION) who tries an experiment to make him super smart. At first, he's really excited because he understands everything and feels smart. But then, he gets lonely because no one understands him. Later, he starts forgetting things and gets dumb again, just like Algernon, the mouse who did the same experiment. The book makes you think about being smart, being different, and what really matters in life.
