Authentic assessment aims to evaluate students' abilities in 'real-world' contexts. In other words, students learn how to apply their skills to authentic tasks and projects. Authentic assessment does not encourage rote learning and passive test-taking. Instead, it focuses on students' analytical skills; ability to integrate what they learn; creativity; ability to work collaboratively; and written and oral expression skills. It values the learning process as much as the finished product.

In authentic assessment, students:

do science experiments
conduct social-science research
write stories and reports
read and interpret literature
solve math problems that have real-world applications

Article Title | Authentic Assessment Overview
URL | https://www.teachervision.com/teaching-strategies/authentic-assessment-overview
Website Title | TeacherVision
Date Accessed | November 09, 2019
Date Published | January 26, 2001

Authentic assessment refers to assessment tasks that resemble reading and writing in the real world and in school (Hiebert, Valencia & Afflerbach, 1994; Wiggins, 1993). Its aim is to assess many different kinds of literacy abilities in contexts that closely resemble actual situations in which those abilities are used.

... in AA, assessment drives the curriculum. That is, teachers first determine the tasks that students will perform to demonstrate their mastery, and then a curriculum is developed that will enable students to perform those tasks well, which would include the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills. This has been referred to as planning backwards. McDonald, J. P. (1992). Dilemmas of planning backwards: Rescuing a good idea. Teachers College Record, 94, 152-169.
