The author creates contrast between Clarisse and Montag by Clarisse asking Montag questions in the beginning of the book. She makes him think about his life and question everything from one simple conversation. Also, the author gives characteristics of Clarisse that are pure and clean while Montag is an older fireman doused in Kerosene.

Bradbury creates contrast by making two characters with opposite personality traits. By making Clarisse more social than Montag. Montag has confusion with what happened, he was confused about Clarisse being so friendly with him when they didn’t even know each other.

M.F. & B.T

He wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask and there was no way of going to knock on her door and ask for it back.”
GG BV

It is clearly depicted how much Montag and Clarisse contrast in character. Although Montag is observational about certain things, (“His inner mind, reaching out to turn the corner for him, had heard the faintest whisper. Breathing? Or was it the atmosphere compressed merely by someone standing quietly there, waiting?”) he doesn’t notice the things Clarisse does. Such as when Clarisse told him about the dew on the grass in the morning- and the man on the moon in the sky. Clarisse also seems to know things about the past, like how firemen used to out fires, instead of start them. Montag just laughs at her, because he doesn’t understand.

L.R. & J.P

Bradbury portrays Montag as a quiet person who never seems to have many social interactions. He wasn't used to hearing talking with-in houses. Clarisse has a more upbeat attitude where she is able to easily spark conversation.
