Firstly I want to point out any of these routes aren't completely guaranteed as in my opinion and through talking to teachers and people in the industry it is all about luck and if you 'get a lucky break' but you can still try all these different ways to get into the acting industry.

Drama schools are one of the most well-known progression routes to get into acting, but it isn't as easy as just turning up and getting in, the demand is very high personally I applied for 2 drama schools and didn't get past the first audition round, this was down to of course myself not being good enough but also just the high demand as every year for a 30 student year over 300 will apply with means only 10% of everyone applying will actually get a place. There are two different types of drama school, those that are connected and funded by a university and those that aren't.

Manchester School of Theatre

This is a drama school this set up in Manchester and is connected to Manchester Metropolitan University, this is a very good thing for the course and the school as its a drama school with a theatre and you get the 30+ contact hours a week training time, and the drama school is funded by the University so they can have more opportunities and give the students more experiences. At the Manchester School of Theatre, its just does one course which is acting so its not a split focus on loads of different courses that takes the time up of the teachers it the one course so they can be fully focused on you. The school actually being in Manchester is another one of its benefits as its a very good city for theatre and media as there's lots different theatres and companies that have links to the acting school some of these are 'BBC, Granada, Royal Exchange Theatre, Contact Theatre, HOME and The Lowry'. Furthermore, being situated in Manchester means its not far from media city which is the hub of every TV organisation and all the big companies and channels that people watch everyday like ITV and BBC they film all of their stuff right near Manchester so if you wanted more opportunities its the place to be. The actual course it offers is a BA Hons in Acting, it is a three year degree which aims to improve your acting skills but overall improve you as a professional modern actor. On the course there is many modules that looks at you as an actor and how improve you and teach you different methods of acting that will challenge and improve you, the first year looks to break you down and look at the smallest details that goes into getting into charcater and just performing a scene then it looks to build back up again with years 2 and 3 looking at different types of acting such as Shakespeare and black box theatre and then year 3 is just about showing off these skills and performing them and then at the end of the 3 years you have a final showcase to agents not only in Manchester but down in London as well this give you the best chance to start a career in the industry.

This drama school is different to Manchester School of Theatre because it's not connected to a university and stands alone and supports itself. The London Academy for Music & Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) is one of the most well-known drama schools in the world and people come from all around the world to go there. It is different to Manchester School of Theatre as LAMDA offers more then just one course in more than just one area so they offer courses in acting, directing, production and technical arts this means there's lots to offer and it means when they do shows and performances they all work collaboratively to create these. In the acting course, it is three years and they offer a wide range of training in different acting methods and focus on build you up as a performer, year 1 looks at the acting skills, the voice, movement and music and just looks to build on techniques then year 2 looks to continue this learning and just build upon it with new types of theatre thrown at you and more work on stage and screen as well. Finally the third year is all about performing and showing off your skillset to the not only the public but agents as well. Again the year size is only 30 and I'm sure hundreds apply so its very hard to get in. LAMDA is unique as after the three years you go on to train as a LAMDA teacher if this is the career path you'd like to go down.

At Salford University they have a course which is called 'Theatre and Performance Practice' this gives students the chance to learn a varied range of skills in stage but also on screen and radio, which is similar to the drama schools courses but the main difference is the element of choice, as when studying at a drama school you have to follow this rigid course structure and don't get much choice in what you are learning but at many university's like Salford you get more choice and can specialise in your certain interest whether that be anything from acting on stage and screen to comedy, physical theatre and clowning. As all the courses looked at its a 3 year course and also follows the same pattern as the drama schools as in year 1 you taught all core modules build a basis of knowledge for you some of these units are; acting methods, performance workshop, performance in context. As you move on to year 2 and 3 the choice becomes bigger and you start choosing optional units that you would like to learn about some of these could be; Acting for camera, theatre making, physical comedy, presenting and many more, these units then influence the third year in which you will do still some core and optional modules but you get to decide on your own practical research and what you would like to focus on. From going to course like Salford's clearly there's many advantages to university course in acting and theatre as they open many doors you never thought would be opened for you and you gain many new experiences you never would have had.

Furthermore they're still other ways that actors can become actors, I think one of the most challenging ways is to be pro-active within yourself and move to places where opportunities would increase and where you have more chance of getting more work. This would mean giving up a lot to move down to somewhere like London or even over the pond to America to try and make it big through just going to some auditions and workshops and hope that someone spots on and you 'get that lucky break'. Furthermore, whilst living in these 'big cities' you could attend many workshops and private lesson to improve yourself as an actor as this would then in turn increase your chances in auditions. There are websites that you can look on to find acting teachers that do one to one sessions one these is called 'superprof' this lets people search for acting teacher in and around London and this would be a helpful way to improve yourself. The one downside to private lessons is that it is just you and the teacher and in acting you do learn from listing and reacting to others and this element is taken out in private lessons, but if you know exactly what you want to focus on then they are a good idea.

Another method of becoming an actor are private lessons they are new and recent and are on YouTube through a company called Masterclass they specialise in giving high quality masterclasses and now Samuel L. Jackson gives one of these. In the trailer for it here, it takes snippets and clips from the overall 21 lesson masterclass about acting and Jackson goes into detail on every little it of how he has learnt how to embody charcters and how to approach auditions. I think this is a very good way for private lessons as you are learning from someone who has actually made it in the industry and learning the techniques he uses, furthermore you can do it within your own home which is even better as other private lessons would require travelling. The one major flaw of these would be you can't ask questions as you're not actually in the room with Samuel L. Jackson so you've just got to hope he answers any question you may have thought of

A job as a drama teacher would be a good progression if you enjoy teaching others and passing on your skills that you've learnt, furthermore you do need to like and be able to work with teenagers and above as drama classes start at most places in year 7 and above which can be hard classes to control, additionally if you wanted to teach but not in a school set up you could work for one of the many drama academy's outside of schools.

The Academy’s ethos of ‘Development Through Drama’ aims to encourage students to be confident within themselves and to communicate well.' Helen O' Grady always has structured lesson plans that always strive to improve the children's social interaction skills, clarity of speech, self esteem and confidence. They work on a 3 term basis and they teach children aged from 5 to 18 the activities they do depend on the age range but some of the activities are 'speech exercises, movement and a creative improvisation or Mime to Music' and then for older students they focus mini scripts and then at the end of academic year they do a show for all students to be a part of and show their parents and friends their progression over the year. You could also work in colleges and universities as a drama teacher this would mean going and getting a degree at university in teaching but these would mean you go work even more in depth and go into different more abstract techniques, ideas and practitioners and get to explore the more unique side of acting.

These are a very high up jobs to walk into but as it states with the right qualifications you should be able to apply for them and go in maybe at the assistant for your job and work your way up as that is what this industry is all about as its such a competitive one you just need to be in it even right at the bottom and just work hard work you're way up till you get the job you want. The main difference between these jobs is the director gets creative control on what they are doing and actually gets a hand in making the production but a stage manager is just there to manger the people and get them to do what they need to do.

Newspaper sales are decline I feel the older ways to market yourself would you use newspapers and Facebook, these are two very different mediums but I feel they both come under this umbrella as I feel they both are on the downward spiral and I think people don't really use Facebook for what it was made for all them years ago, I think if you asked most people what on there's Facebook feed I think a fair portion of them would say stuff like cat videos and food videos that isn't relevant to their careers or aspiring careers. I think you still use Facebook to market yourself but as secondary force or just to back up your main method of marketing. For newspaper it is factual knowledge that newspaper sales are on decline, 'The total number of national newspapers sold in the UK fell from an average of 7.6m a day to just over 7m between March 2014 and March 2015, a decline of 7.6%'. I feel in this social media age and ever changing world it would be very counter productive to use newspapers as your main use of marketing yourself as the people who want to see it most likely don't look through millions of copies of newspapers to find the next star (Jackson, 2015)

I personally use Instagram to self market myself I hope to get employed through this, I used this as its the social media I use anyways on a daily basis and I feel I understand the most. So far after having my profile active for about 3 weeks when writing this, and I as you can see from the screenshots I have 65 followers and following 225 people I know it isn't the best to follow more people that follow you but I am following lots of casting agencies and people of interest that I feel could attract the attention and to see if I can get them to notice me. I think its going ok so far as I'm not the best at posting consistently and I find getting the hashtags right is a difficult thing and I'm not very good at this but I feel I am learning and keep trying to find things to post.

Furthermore I have had an idea top create a podcast with my fellow students Ben and Jack, this was my idea as I thought we could do this and post them on YouTube and make podcast about us and about acting as whole and about current topics as it is new upcoming medium that people do listen off and take notice of, additionally putting it YouTube opens up a whole new world for us as it means we make videos and promote ourselves this way as this is huge very successful site where people can make it and people can gain followers through this and then go into anything they want if they have a big enough following behind them. For example take KSI or know JJ at this time writing he has 20.5 million subscribers and these force has made him one of the most well known people in the UK and the world and he has been a film, his own film with another youtuber and because of this huge force behind him he has been able to anything he wants like music and now boxing as he is fighting again on November 9th against another massive youtuber Logan Paul. I feel YouTube is a huge world of self promotion and marketing yourself can become very easy if you get a good substantial following on YouTube that actually like you, like the content you produce and will support anything you do. You could also use media such as Snapchat and Tik Tok as these are two new social apps the later being very new. You could try and make it big on these and just promote yourself on these but I feel they are more difficult as people haven't fully figured out how to promote themselves on them. I feel twitter is a good way of promoting yourself and marketing yourself but I personally am not very good at it so I didn't go down this route but I feel it is needed if you get to certain amount of fame.

When working in the performing arts industry, it is very big industry and can be quiet scary for performers to try and make it themselves. They will need support, maybe not on a day to day basis, but they could need support from anything like representing them, to their health requirements and their safety going into theatres and on film sets. There many ways that performers can be supported one of these by agents and agencies as agents can help them grow in the industry and help them by representing them and getting them more jobs, as I mentioned before an agency like Piece of Cake Casting could support you offer you auditions for roles of even straight up jobs as extras in different films. If you want to be pro-actively represented then getting an actual agent would be beneficial as they got out of their way to not only get you jobs but to promote you get your name out their. You can alternatively support yourself and do this yourself by following casting directors, producers directors and actors and try to get them to notice you and build your name this way. Furthermore, you may need other support with issues such as 'Accident insurance, Bullying and Harassment report line, Career advice, Dance passport, discounts, health and safety, job support, legal support and many more. Then you may need to sign up to a union as these are helpful as if you are in the performance world you can't guarantee jobs and can't guarantee your job security so the more help and support you can get the better as it gives you peace of mind that you can anywhere and whatever that happens, you have people to help fight your corner. The two main unions in the UK for performers are Equity and BECTU these two offer the support for pretty much same issues with only a few differences, the main ones being with Equity you get your name and card and with BECTU, they push forward that we support you in legal matters they are very proud that they do this. Additionally, people working in this industry can support each other as directors can and probably should support performers especially if they are working with them but even after the work they can still support them by recommending them to different projects and this can go both ways actors if they have enough power can recommend directors and even writers can ask to for certain directors and actors to perform their scripts. Furthermore, you can get support in the form of funding from many different sources, these could range from the Arts Council which is public funding, private funding and third sector funding from organisations like Coca Cola, also you can get sponsorships from different organisations for performances that you could do.

This quiz seems quite in depth and I feel is a good feature to have as it means the people running a project can make sure they have everything that the arts council need them to have so they can consider them for funding. A key aspect of this quiz is that even if the project checks all the boxes the arts council can only consider funding not guarantee it. As it says the 'Project Grants is a highly competitive programme', so they can't fund everyone as the arts council don't get enough money for that. I think all the questions the quiz asked are very key to anyone's project as the arts council have to carefully select the applicants, so the questions need to tell the arts council important information like how much money the project needs and the arts council will only consider funding something if it helps a community or helps impacts others in a positive way.

After the quiz you should read all the information that comes along with applying for the funding, the information differs for different amounts. As stated if you want £15,000 or less is will take a shorter time then if it is more as I imagine the bigger the amount you want the more time it will take to collate the money and the longer it will take to see if the project is worth funding as, that really is what the arts council are there for to see if projects are worth funding as all they want to do is to expand the opportunities or people in the UK in the arts but sadly they don't have the money for everyone and every project so they have to fund the ones that will impact others in a positive way as that matches the arts councils ethos of helping others.

The arts council had 965 applications for the Project Grants but sadly for them many of the project they could only fund 111 of them and they used £932,024 to fund these project. they only have £14.4 million to spend across the next four years so they need chose wisely on how they spend this money as they need money for other areas and for other project that they could fund later on. Every year the arts council spend 3.6 million on creative practitioners and they regularly invest in other practitioners that support other disciplines that the arts council want to help.

Private funding is pretty simple as it is just funding that is private. Funds that are private are just for a few people. If I was producing the pantomime Beauty and Beast, private funding would be if a wealthy business man donated money to the panto to help me produce this. The government is public funding as they give money out to others as in the arts council and then they share it out to people who need it.

That definition really sums up private funding well as, it states the good and the bad parts of it. It says without government involvement this is true and correct as private funds are never from the government and never have any ties to the government. Furthermore the statement says that privates funds have no 'support or guarantee' from the government this is a downside to private funds as when you go for public funds. There is a support network as like with the arts council so even if you fail to get the funds they will help you find other ways to get the money. Private sector funds won't do this as they have no need to. Additionally, there is no guarantee that the money is actually there , at least with public funds you know the money is there. The guarantee is still not completely there that you will get funding as organisations like the arts council have to chose very wisely on who gets funding so people will still miss out. With private funding you can still miss out and then be stuck on where or what to do next to get the funding you need.

As I mentioned private grants there is no support and no guarantee of support, as if you submit an application for a private grant the institution has no right to inform you why you would be unsuccessful this would be annoying as the people running the project would like to know why they would be denied, the private sector institution has no responsibility to tell you so this is a disadvantage of this. Another disadvantage of private grants is 'If you feel the grant process is discriminatory or unresponsive toward recipients, you may not be able to seek help from a higher authority'. This is a clear disadvantage as you have no one to turn to or no support if this happens. (Marquis) (The authors at InvestorWords)

There still is advantages of private funding one of these is 'Private grants may also award smaller individual grant amounts due to limited resources.' This is an advantage and a disadvantage as; a advantage because it means applicants would still get money but still a disadvantage as it is a smaller amount of funding which may not be enough for the project. The amount of funding would vary as depending on how much you apply for and how much the private sector institution can give you.

A huge advantage of private grants is that it is a much simpler application process as yes the 3 steps then the different rounds for the arts council seemed relatively simple but it would take a long time and you would need to fully explain exactly what you are going to use the money for. For private grants there no need to do this and a lot less people apply for private grants and this highly increases the chances of getting the funds. This is a huge advantage as from my prior research I know that lots and lots of people apply for public funding and a very small percentage successfully receive the funding so with less people applying that makes it more likely to get the funding from the private sector.

The application process for the money seems quiet simple as its 4 pages to read and just make sure your in the guidelines, a key difference to the arts council is it never mentions about changing your project to suit them as I imagine if you go to the national lottery you already are trying to help your community. I looked into the application process for a grant of anything under £100,000 but they offer grants bigger than this too. Page 1 is about really who can apply this seems the strictest section as the national lottery can't fund everyone so they must have to make it strict so if you were a school, registered charity or social enterprise or some others you could apply. Additionally on the page is states that each project has to meet only one of their funding priorities which is a lot easier to do then make sure your project fits all the questions needed for the arts council. The National Lottery Funded priorities are; bringing people together and building strong relationships in and across communities, improving the places and spaces that matter to communities, enabling more people to fulfil their potential by working to address issues at the earliest possible stage.' The application is just some questions to make sure individuals, religious or political groups aren't trying to get the money, then its create a login, fill out an application form and the waiting time is 2 months to see if your project has received funding or not. I feel they don't offer a lot of support network afterwards if your project doesn't get funding this is similar to the National Lottery, neither offer the support network that the arts council did.

As a performer you can funding from another source this would be sponsorships, as if you wanted to do a performance that maybe targeted a specific cause, charity or issue you could be sponsored by the council of the area the performance could be in or an organisation that has a connection to your performance. For example if you needed costume you could get a costume shop to sponsor your show, provide costume then you could promote them and their organisation. Another way of sponsorship would be if you did a performance lets say about racism in football and you get football clubs community trust's to sponsor you and give you enough money to create the performance and make sure it is the best possible version of itself so it can be informative, helpful and tackle the issue in the right way, if you started to devise a performance like this in burton you could contact Burton Albion Community Trust to see if they would sponsor your performance and then this would get their name out their and benefit them as well.

After researching all these different methods, I can now make a judgement on what I think would be best for me and my professional development. I am not completely sure what I want to go into but I still wnat to broaden my skills from an education systems so I think drama schools would be a good idea as its one to one work, with small classes, constant class, just about honing and improving my skills as an actor and gaining new acting skills, and just making sure that basics of voice, movement and facial expressions are improved and worked on so they are to the best of my ability as I progress through a course like the ones I have spoken about. Furthermore, another option for me could be university in a course similar to Salford's course about 'Theatre and Performance Practice' as then because university aren't with a teacher and have less contact hours I can still improve my acting skills but it will also help me again other skills in filmmaking, teaching, presenting and many others so I then have a much broaden options when I leave instead of just being trained in acting. I'd prefer to stay in the education system as I feel it would continue to improve my team working and problem solving skills as I'll have to do this on a daily basis to be able to put on performances to the highest quality possible. I think for my professional development now, taking masterclasses and paying for my own agent wouldn't be the best for me as I am unsure of exactly what route to go down, but being part of an agency as it would be good to have the opportunity to maybe get some acting experience on set of a film or TV show so I can just keep improving my own ability and keep gaining the vital experience that will set me aside from others.

These other progression routes are a very good idea as I already teach drama for Helen O' Grady drama academy and this has given good experience in helping out teaching classes and seeing how they are ran, what exercises to do and how the classes differ for the different age groups, I have also done one to one work with the students and help some of them specifically for monologues, and how to use their voice, movement and facial expression to help them build their own acting skills, these are the parts I most enjoy. As I do really enjoy teaching and helping other broaden their own acting skills I would like to continue my professional development in the best way for me that I feel is to go to schools or colleges and sit in or even help in classes and lessons would be very beneficial for me as I would be bale to see the difference in school and college classes to a drama academy classes and it would help me teach more from a brief and the hit the different criteria and get through the different topics that I need to in a lesson, and its good to teach to have experience to teach a range of students as everyone is unique, I fell if I can get experience teaching this would be good as I can work on my initiative as this was low on my skills audit and being a classroom environment would help with this. I do think a good idea for my professional develop to gain absolutely new skills would be to apply for a runner as it is the bottom of the rung when it comes to a film crew but you have to start somewhere and I would be able to gain new skills and see how filming works and how efficient the industry is and after having jobs as a runner then I could if I wanted to try and work my way up in the crew and move onto working with the cameras or on the sound depending on what I want. I think applying for a job as a runner would be helpful as I can improve my reliability, confidence and training as I'll have to be very reliable and get all my jobs done for everyone, also if I get the job it is training in the industry and being in the industry will in turn improve my confidence. If I really want to with my black belt in Karate I could continue my training in this and then go into stunt performing, this would a different turn for my own professional development but I wouldn't mind expanding my skills in this area as well.

For my own professional development I think it doesn't matter if I want to go into acting or teaching or whatever I think I should use the new media I talked about as it has no signs of slowing down so I would use that and I think it does depend on the career I would like as if I do want to go into acting I should opt for a very 'me' heavy instagram and have a constant posting schedule and make it a lot shout myself and what I do and all the acting and performances that I do then I should or could branch out to YouTube to create the post showreels to show people who could be interested in me and my work. I feel if I went down a different career path of least say teaching I'd still need an online profile but it would be more about what and who I follow so I keep up with current teaching trends and curriculums but I could still post stuff that is 'pg' and wouldn't jeopardise a future career in the education system. Through the use of my social media I could improve my creativity and communication as from my skills audit these are two of the lowe skills and I feel through expressing myself online I can improve these two and these can transfer then into my acting and teaching. Furthermore my social skills are very low because of my lack of social media status and lack of regular posts so going into the acting world would almost force me to post stuff.

If I was going into the acting world personally before my research I probably wouldn't have joined a union just because I didn't understand them but now after researching the main two unions in the UK. I feel I would join one of them, I would join Equity over BECTU, I would make this choice as I feel they make the union seem more friendly to hear about, they have a very long list of benefits and offer all the same as BECTU but without being legally aggressive. I also feel because Equity has such a wide variety of members in different careers and inside Equity people can all work together I feel I ca improve my own personal experience by maybe collaborating with some different members who have different professions to myself, my experience was quite low on my skills audit so any more of it I gain is for the better. I feel Equity offer a much more structed union compare to BECTU and I think I would enjoy this more and it would benefit me more as then even whilst being a freelance actor I know ive got the people I can contact if I do need anything at any time, lastly I feel it is just safer to be a part of a union than not be a part of one.

After my research into the different types of funding. In my personal opinion if I needed to use the funding options on offer I feel I would use them because now from what I know theirs at least 4 chances of my project getting funding. If I had to pick which one to go for I would chose the public funding as it does its downsides that it can only support so many projects a year but I feel I would and could tailor my project towards what they are looking for. From my own research I know what to expect from the questions and the rest of the process as it is set out and laid out so I know what is happening, furthermore they are the only type of funding to offer support even if you don't get the money so you are not completely back to square one f your project isn't chosen. I do like the other types of funding but for my own professional development I feel they wouldn't benefit me as I am new to the acting world so I would like the most support possible in whatever I am doing, I feel trying to get private funding as a newcomer would be a long shot and would waste time to try and hope someone would notice what I am doing and want to help me. The third sector funding isn't a bad idea but I feel they are looking for certain projects that fit their specific needs and I wouldn't want to change my project just to get funding. I feel like having funding would help me become more open minded when it comes to the creative process of my project and also improve my skill of preparation as on my skills audit that still have room of improvement so having funding would mean id have to be prepared way before deadlines and show the funder what I can do and what my project will become.

A short target that will help me improve my comedic acting will be to look at my movements and how I can do them in a comedic way. I did some research into this and I looked at the character Mr. Bean, based from the movie Bean, who is played by Rowan Atkinson. In this particular scene, the actor shows many comedic skills through the character, such as exaggerated movements. I’m referring to the use of small details he shows with his arms, hands, and legs. The body thrusts against the hand dryer was very amusing, and this added as great comedy. The way he struggles to hold the lightbulb also is very funny to watch. I’m interested in his movements and how this affects the piece overall, in this case it makes it very amusing and laughable. Without the gestures and movements he performs, this scene would be very boring and less interesting. I feel this is very important for any acting piece, and this is why I would like to work towards using my body and incorporating it in ways that can show a more interesting and funny approach to my character. From this research, I can now start to work towards improving my comedic acting skills overall and using movement as a starting point. I want this target achieved by the end of March as I have a performance at the end of April that is very comedic and I want to understand how to act in this way before then.

A short term target to help work on these long term targets , I have chosen to look into the piece Bouncers, this piece is 54 minutes long which will help me get an idea for my first target on staying consistent. The piece also has moments where the actors shout, whisper, speak normally, have an accent and sing. Watching this piece has shown me how staying consistent is important, to not break character or show weakness in any areas is important to nail a role well. This piece shows a great example on how to maintain the energy, physical movement, overall performance, voice and to stay focused at all times. I could apply this to my performance by assessing what exactly it is my piece is about and what I am supposed to portray, than I can apply the necessary skills I have identified in the Bouncers Piece. For my second target, the use of voice is very important as this tells the audience a lot about the character, the atmosphere, the attitude the character portrays, if there’s tension or lightness to the conversation, it also helps with the comedy affects by exaggerating words or not exaggerating words by whispering or even miming. To work on this, I will watch Bouncers and see if there are specific moments or skills I can acquire within my performance which can benefit me. I would like these targets done by the end of April, I will complete this short term target by doing the research I mentioned and analysing this play and gaining skills from it that will help me to stay in charcter throughout any piece and disregard any distractions.

Why will these help towards your career goal?

I think these targets help me towards my career goal as they will generally just mean that I will gain a lot of new skills throughout the process of completing these targets as I will develop my acting and add different acting styles to my skills. I will develop my comedic timing from these targets and not just my comedic timing with my voice but with my movement and body language as well which are skills I don’t currently have but these targets will put me on the path to improving as an actor. Furthermore, the targets I set can all be completed by May and will have shown a vast improvement in acting. All these improvements will help me greatly towards my career goal which is just making it into the industry as an actor or doing teacher as I will need a lot strings to my bow if I want to go into acting and I need to be a versatile diverse actor to be able to teach others what I know and I need to have a vast experience and knowledge of acting styles to do this.

How will gaining more skills develop your ability to be successful at getting into the performing arts industry?

Gaining my skills will develop my ability to be successful at getting into the performing arts industry because if I complete all my targets I will have gain a lot of different and unique skills and I would have tried my hand some different acting styles that I have never attempted before so this means I would have experienced new styles of acting and be a more experienced actor but also have more knowledge of acting styles and the practitioners that go with them. So, when going into the industry I may have an advantage on others as I can draw upon the skills that I will learn from the completion of my targets to help me get a foot on the ladder of the very competitive performing arts world, furthermore it helps that all my targets relate to different types of acting so I am not just trying to improve one aspect of myself as an actor but all aspects instead.

Crongton Knights is one of the featured shows on a derby theatre and it is a contemporary theatre piece that has thriller aspects to it as it contains so very modern ways of moving the story along by having songs and not only songs but rapping and the cast actually beatboxing on stage this adds to the story but also the setting and tone of the piece as it is set in Crongton Estate which seems from the trailer and scenery they have a very down trodden place to live. Here is a review of Crongton Knights from when it was shown at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry and the review was written by The Stage. This review explains that the show is very moving at its best and it can tug on the heartstrings of the audience, the songs and beatboxing add to this and make the audience really feel for the charcters and the journey they go on.

Treasure island is a different genre to Crongton Knights as it is more family friendly and is inspired by the original treasure island that we all know and love. This version includes songs and live music as well to add to the fun for all. It has been set by Derby Theatre to release just before Easter Weekend this will hopefully for them increase the chance of people taking their kids to go see it as they will be off school and its clearly aimed at children and this shows already the variety of two of the most upcoming and popular shows on at Derby theatre now.

Ten years since a tearful goodbye, an old flame returns from fighting Napoleon. But the look of disappointment on Captain Valentine’s face when he greets a more mature, less glamorous Phoebe, spurs our determined heroine to action.
She becomes the wild and sparkling Miss Livvy, a younger alter-ego who soon entraps the clueless Captain. As their romance is rekindled' This show is very different to the other two as they are drama and family friendly show but this is mainly focused on being comedic and already I am seeing the variety in popularity of the shows that are upcoming at Derby Theatre

LadyKiller is about 'A hotel room, a maid and a dead woman. It’s not what it looks like, really, it’s not. It was self-defence… and anyway the woman was asking for it. The chambermaid considers herself to be a pretty normal person; she reads books. She pretended to read the party manifestos at the General Election. She’s even read The Psychopath Test and she’s pretty sure she’s not one so...' This is another different show its for 16's and older only as its from the horror genre and can be very gruesome. Its very popular because of this contemporary style of piece and sold out at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, this does mean it has comedy elements within it but it shows a different side to the genre that people don't usually see before which adds to the popularity of it. 'Taken at face value Ladykiller is simply very entertaining – especially for those of us who laugh at all the ‘wrong’ things – but it also says a lot about gendered expectations and violence. Women aren’t evil. Apart from when they really, really want to be.' The review does mention that even though it is 'a very funny and refreshingly offbeat comedy' it has one flaw it is a little bit too long which shows its isn't perfect but can still be popular with flaws.

Two sisters are estranged and bicker over text. Their brittle and aggressive language is pushing them further apart when what they really want is to meet, clear the air and talk about the event that happened when they were young girls and haunt them still.' This is a show that clearly isn't a comedy and more of thriller, it wants to be hard hitting and tap into the audiences emotions.
The review across mentions that ' I Think We Are Alone swells with the simple, difficult, important desire for connection.' It got 3 stars out of 5 which shows it was quite good but had its flaws as well.

This an adaption of George Orwell's very famous book that is one of the most famous around. It has been adapted for theatre, 'Surveillance, identity and propaganda were Orwell’s fiction but are now our reality. In the age of ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’, 1984 is startlingly relevant.' This book is very relevant in todays society and would get popularity at the theatre because of this and how much it has gotten right about the world we live in. I'm sure it will get very good reviews and will show that Orwell got so much right about the time we live in. This piece is very different to Frantic Assemblies as it doesn't aim to pull on heartstrings or emotions it just wants to tell the story that was written so long ago. This review for the show says that it was 'It is no mean feat to offer a new perspective on a familiar work. That, however, is what Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, as joint creators of this new version of George Orwell's famous novel, have ingeniously done. But, while this co-production between the Almeida, Headlong and Nottingham Playhouse makes exciting viewing, it also raises a nagging concern.' This review gave the show four out of five stars and it shows material from long ago can be remade into something good.

After my research into the shows and how popular they are at this theatre, I've found that there are lot of different shows on at Leicester Curve I would say even more variety then Derby Theatre. One thing that is similar is that they all seem quite popular or at least quite hyped for when they are released. At Leicester Curve they have a large variety of shows as Crooners for example is very different to DNA but they both look very hyped to be released because they targeting completely different audiences and the shows differ as none of them are massive blockbuster shows but they are have their own niche markets and are looked to attract a certain target audience

Nottingham Theatre Royal is the most different theatre I've looked at compared to the others I think this is because it is the biggest and the most famous theatre and has a lot shows but the shows are quite similar. For example on at the Theatre Royal there are two musicals on at the moment 'Mamma Mia' and 'Six' these are two very different musicals. 'Mamma Mia' is the story that everyone has heard and is a very fun family friendly musical that could be for all the family even though it has adult undertones, it is fun light hearted musical that everyone can enjoy. 'Six' is a musical only released a few years ago but it is Henry VIII's six wives and their version of the story and what happened. These musicals are very different but they are going for similar audiences in musical lovers which does affect how popular they could be and furthermore that 'Mamma Mia' has the history it does this could affect how popular 'Six' will be. Furthermore, Nottingham Theatre Royal clearly has an affiliation with Opera North who are an Opera group who have a lot shows and performances scheduled at the Theatre Royal. This again is very different to the other theatre as they both didn't have any Opera at them and especially didn't work with an Opera group but this come impact how well each Opera show does as I feel it is quite niche market and small target audience so will they all come watch four Opera shows or will some of them lose popularity because of this.

Nimax Theatres are a theatre company who own a lot of different theatres especially ones in London, one theatre they own in the Duchess Theatre which is where I went to go see 'THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG'. Nimax Theatres clearly are a very famous theatre company as I can tell from looking at the shows that are put on at their theatres as they have very worldwide famous shows such as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Everyone's Talking about Jamie. This shows how different these theatres are to every other one that I've looked at as they clearly only show high end shows that high budget and will be very popular which increases the income. That is something I have mentioned that popularity so show affects the income in brings for the people who have put all the effort in to make the show and for the theatre that is hosting it. So the intention for every show is also that it is made to be as popular as it can be so the income can be bigger, this task is sometimes easier with some performances than others as for 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' income is easy as it is a worldwide phenomenon but for others such as 'THE PLAY GOES WRONG' shows like this rely on the reviews and word of mouth to get the traction it needs. For all the theatres they want very show to be popular as it looks better on the company and the theatre and increases the income as well, furthermore if one companies show does well and is popular this gives them good will and would be more likely to be able to do more.

In this day and age there's more than one way to do anything including watching theatre and watching live theatre as well as now cinema chains like Showcase have something which has been named as Event cinema. This just means when 'events' are on somewhere around the world you can watch it in your local cinema. Event Cinema doesn't just show live theatre it shows recorded theatre and you can go watch a range of theatre from the comfort of a cinema. This shows that people in modern times are accessing their theatre differently to how they used to and from my research I can see that theatre audiences want a lot different to what they used to. They're a range of pieces being shown at Showcase's event cinema they range from a Matthew Bourne directed ballet piece, a national theatre piece and a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company and thats just to name a few. This shows the diversity in theatre that on show from a cinema chain now and how's that the audience have changed their needs over the last few years. As traditionally going to theatre was a big thing people would go there watch something they thought was going to good and it was an event and experience in itself but not audiences would rather give up that experience to watch theatre in a far more comfy surroundings. Looking at event cinema with a different perspective it can be looked at in a good light as you wanted to see something that was half way across the world and you knew you couldn't get their event cinema can come in handy and it then because watchable. It isn't just Showcase who out this one as you can see Odeon Cinema also have this feature which benefits people greatly

When I say choice I refer to the amount of variety there is in theatres these days and the amount of different genres of theatre that are focuses upon as without research I thought most shows were quiet similar and bland and theatres especially smaller ones like Derby didn't have much choice to offer but after researching what shows are actually being put on. I now know that there is a vast choice of performances at all theatres and these performances are popular because of each other. As each performance wants to be popular and most of them are quite unique which means they all target a different sector or age range of audience members and with these different members going to different shows it creates popularity for all the shows which is good thing, of course there will cross over so someone could go see 'Treasure 'Island and 'Ladykiller' at Derby Theatre but this still will help both shows with ticket sales and if that person likes both and talks about both it will increase popularity for them

The other aspect to what theatre audiences want nowadays is comfort. This relates to event cinema which I mentioned across. Audiences are caring less about the experience of going to the theatre and will watch good acting and good show from anywhere and are less bothered where this is, which is how event cinema has thrived. Audiences would I feel nowadays choose comfort over experience any day as with things becoming more expensive people wnat to have the possible time and the easiest possible experience and watching theatre in your local cinema is a lot easier than travelling somewhere to watch it in a cramp packed theatre.

I think this is because people like to see new pieces and new ideas and not the same old shows over and over again. The only other type of theatre hat is recurring throughout the theatres I looked at was musicals these have always been quite popular and I'm sure will remain so because of the vast amount of choice within the genre

Helen O’ Grady as I’ve mentioned is drama company that was created by the woman with that name it is a worldwide company that aims to encourage students to grow in confidence within themselves and to develop communication skills as well. They have been doing these practical classes ever since 1979 when the company was first set up in Australia. Sadly now due to current climate things have had to change massively as having a drama class can be classes as not only a mass gathering it is also in the eyes of the government an unessential activity to they have been shut down for the foreseeable future, which will widely affect the students, teachers and company as a whole moving forward. The classes I used to teach at before they were closed have tried to combat this closing down by moving online. Their aim is to continue the good work the classes do but to move them online due to the closure of all the classes even after trying to follow the health guidelines. The online classes will consist of mainly improving the students social and communication skills as teaching drama online is very difficult thing to do when drama is mainly done in groups but nevertheless, they will continue to teach and improve their students. At this moment in time even I don’t know exactly how we will run the classes as we need to sort out a platform first then a structure for each of the different age groups of classes so they will be beneficial and different.

If I had the power to decide what and how we will run these classes after my research I have few ideas how to do this in best possible way and what activities to do and ones that we can do online as this is quite difficult for drama classes to do this. It is a lot easier to do dance classes online as you can copy a teacher and the moves you do as you can dance solo and this a way how the professionals train they train solo and can practice and train themselves. With acting this is different and more difficult to do drama with no one else in the room unless you just learning lines but actually trying to teach a class is even more difficult as you can’t physically interact with people just hear and see them. If I could control the online classes I would use google hangouts or google classroom. Google Hangouts is owned by google and is a communication software product, it was originally part of google + and then became a standalone app on the 15th of May 2013, over time the features from other google apps, google +, google messenger and google talk. I think this app will work for our classes as because it is similar to how texts work so parents and even their kids could understand how to work it. Google Hangouts has this layout and it does look similar to a contact book and you can just scroll through and find whoever you want to talk to and create a group and have video calls and send messages and we could create groups per class, furthermore now that google hangouts has stopped being used for enterprise companies it is now focused on just the general public it may be quicker and faster than before.

Alternatively, we could use google classroom, this is also owned by the big search engine, it was released a year after Google hangouts on 12th of August 2014. It aims to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments. It combines google drive, google docs, sheets, slides, Gmail and google calendar. You can use a private code to join a class which would work for Helen O’ Grady as we could have a private code per class and if we could video call on this app it would be perfect as we could share work and share scripts through the app and help students progress. Whatever app we use we need to be able to video all the students so a teacher can see them and show them the activities we could do. Activities we could do would have to focus on working the confidence and vocal skills of the students as we can’t really do movemnet as not all the students will have the space to do this. Lessons will change depending on the age of the students for the youngest class that we teach the ages range from 4 to 8 so we should focused on poems and just small spoken word pieces to improve the confidence of the students as we can a small part of text like we do in lesson and get the students to learn it through practice then give certain lines to students as we do in lesson and get them to say out loud by themselves as this improves confidence and we can do this online as well. Furthermore, the lines we can say can work on different aspects of the voice and the little ones pronunciation and diction as when at a young age these are two skills that need to continuous development for the children, small tongue twisters would be good for this for example one line ‘articulation is a form of gymnastics between the tip of the tongue the teeth and the lips’. This sentence can be good for articulation because of how you say it and the faster you say it the harder it becomes; this sentence can also be used for older classes as well. Just to finsh off talking about the younger class we would emephaize different words in sentences and try to work through them slowly and seeing how each student pronounces and them and how well their diction is. Every week if this online learning continues, we could give a task to go away and do at home then the week after show back to the class.

For the older classes you will again have to work on voice and vocal production but of course you can focus on more complex skills as the students are older, I feel what I mentioned for the younger class this can be done as a warm up for the older ones just to get them thinking about articulation, diction and pronunciation. Then we would work on some more complex tongue twisters such as ‘she stood upon her balustraded balcony inexpiably mimicking him hiccupping’ and then move onto looking at the pace of the voice by saying the very famous phrases ‘red lorry, yellow lorry’ and see how fast students can say this but it still sounds like words. We could also work on accents for the students as this is a very valuable skills to have and do exercises like giving some students a sentence and accent then having others guess the accent this can be also done when with different emotions as well. Then, we can get them to work on scripts and get them learn lines and do read throughs and learn when and where events will occur as for Helen O’ Grady the summer term is when we do our final production so we can just prepare for this best we can.

Doing lessons online has its pros and cons for the teachers, students and company as a whole. The pros for teachers and students are that the classes are still running, the teachers are still delivering the best classes possible and the students are still getting taught the best they can do while being online. The pros for the company are that they can still keep running their classes and trying to run as a company. There are still many cons though to this online learning one of them for drama is that we can’t block any pieces out, we can’t do any movement exercises, or we can’t improve the student’s physicality and gestures because of not having the space. The lesson being online means the students are losing out on actual social integration, it is good that they can talk one another over facetime but actual physical interaction will be lost for the students and this will hinder them in the future.

They have a wide variety of performances that were filmed on stage from musicals to plays and even concerts as well this is good for theatre audiences as they can still enjoy what they normally would.

As now all the cinemas are closed this means there is no event cinema and no cinema generally but because of the amount of option that we have even if people are self isolating we still have a lot of choice and to watch movies and TV shows and sometimes even musicals. As we have lots of streaming services to pick rom and use the existing two of Netflix and Amazon Prime are both very good for films and TV shows and have a wide variety of entertainment for the people ate home. One company that will profit a lot from the UK self isolating for the next few weeks is Disney plus as it was released just a day after the three week period started and it has a very wide collection of all Disney movies, TV shows, recent and ones from the past, it has Marvel content as well Star Wars and new TV shows from both will be added to it. Furthermore it has a whole section for documentaries and learning so we can learn about the world and what is out their whilst we can't experience it and finally because Disney have made some in the past there is some musicals that are available to watch on the app ones such as; High school musical, Encore, The Sound of Music, Newsies and many more so people can still enjoy theatre and get entertained from home without leaving.
