For this portion i chose Carnival as the social aspect, which will be used to explain the theme Caribbean Cultural Expression.
Carnival is one one the many festivals that were adopted as a result of our history.
BRIEF HISTORY OF CARNIVAL

Carnival is said to have a French background, which started in 1783, and later on was adopted by the freed Africans after the Emancipation bill was passed in 1833. in both contexts the festival symbolised freedom and happiness. Carnival has grown since then to be reflection of our innovativeness as a people, as it now serves as a medium to show our creativity. Today, carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is celebrated annually before the religious season of Lent. However, because of our diversed and dynamic culture, it has now evovled to include all people of all races and portrays in everyway a taste of every ethnicity and culture in Trinidad and Tobago.

Carnival, in the Caribbean, is a forum that facilitates the mixing of cultures, races and ethinic groups. On the same note, the music that is played around this time has a mixture of different genres of music from all over the world. For instance, as of recently a new type of soca emerged by the name of "Afro-Soca" which is a blend of African beats and rhthyms tied in with soca.

As a result of this creation of new music from the traditional forms of music i.e Calypso. one can say that culture can be catagorized into "Pure" and "Diluted". For Example Calypso can be considered "Pure" because this was the orginal state of Carnival music and Soca can be considered "Diluted" as it was born out of Calypso music. Similarly Carnival costumes can also be catagorized in the same way, for example, in the earlier years of Carnival, costumes took on a more traditional style where you would have portayals of folklore characters such as 'The Midnight Robber'. This would be considered "Pure" as it was the orginal stage of Carnival wear.

For this portion i chose Queen's Royal College in Port of Spain Trinidad. This historical landmark in Trinidad is one of the "Magnificent Seven" around the Queen's Park Savannah. This building today is one of the most well known boys' schools in Trinidad and Tobago. Its foundation stone was laid on November 11th 1902, by Sir Courtney Knollys, the acting Governor at the time and design by Daniel M. Hahn, the chief Draughtsman of the Public Works Department . At this time period, Trinidad and Tobago and most of the Caribbean was still under the British rule. The architecture of the main block is German Renaissance in style, evident by its solid appearance. This school. along which the other six historical sites in this area, was designed with foreign architectural styles. for example German, French even Dutch. The restoration and maintenance of this building is and important reminder of the imperial English rule in the 18th -19th centuries.Today, the Queen's Royal College has been almost fully restored and still facilitates majority of the male student population.

Upon reading an internet article, by the Caribbean Development Bank, it was identified that gender inequality still exists in the Caribbean as stated in the article. This issue of Gender Inequality can be tracked back to the says before slavery came to the Caribbean and even after. However, this was affecting mainly woman and girls where women were not allowed to go to school and even of they did they didnt learn much, but the boys and men were more involved in going to school as they were seen as superior and held leadership qualities. As a result for years women were seen as the lesser beings and only had suboordinate and submissive roles in the households. Even though as time passed women have begun to take on more roles than before there is still some measure of gender inequality as women are hardly considered for high positions in jobs, and are paid less than men even though they do the same work. Similarly, this article that was written earlier this year, in May 2016, revealed that this issues of gender inequality still exist in the Caribbean today. However, there have been strategies being implemented in order to reduced the gender gap.
