He did not have a higher/formal education. He was a Scottish-American industrialist, businessman who led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry. After moving to Wisconsin in 1837,  he continued his education and he worked his way up to become editor of newspapers in Madison. Sholes developed the first practical typewriter. He changed the layout of the original keyboard, and added a shift button, which allowed the use of lower case and upper case letters. In 1864, he was able to secure his first patent. When Alexander was growing up he was a teacher for deaf children by feeling vocal cords. He had created an invention called the Telegraph, and continued to make improvements. Bell's main invention was the telegraph, which allowed people to communicate faster and helped businesses grow. On 1876 at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Alexander Graham Bell presented the telephone to the world.

He became an American businessman and the first American to successfully drill for oil.  He used the steam engine to drill oil and made it practical.
