When Joe died, Janie began to be true to herself and independent which sparks an external conflict in the town. Hurston describes the feelings of the town towards Janie’s new behavior by saying, “It was after the picnic that the town began to notice things and got mad”. People thought that Janie should still be grieving and honoring her late husband by remarrying to someone that can add to her standings and is “worth her time”.
