My milkshake moment was this year when I noticed my students had a hard time working quietly. I allowed them to talk as long as they could work however they continued to forget to use indoor voices which then went to forgetting to raise their hands to speak. I knew I had to do something.

I found a book called "My Mouth is a Volcano" . It is a book all about calling out and interrupting which the story calls "eruptions" and strategies to use to help the students not do both of those behaviors. It also explains to the students why it is important to not call out or interrupt people when they are talking. Then after we read it I would often refer to the book and point out when eruptions were happening so the students could begin to see what eruptions really were.

Superhero Voice Levels

I also implemented a Superhero voice level chart. My classroom theme is superheros and I found a voice level chart on Teachers Pay Teachers, so when the students are working or I am teaching they know the voice level they should be using. It worked like a charm! The students responded so well and even began keeping in each other in check about their voice levels. Once they grew accustom to the chart, before we started a new activity I would ask them which voice level they think would be best for that activity. This image is the exact one I have and I love it!

More Structure

I realized that my students this year needed more structure. Whereas the previous year my students were able to better self-regulate themselves than the students I had this year. So I needed to add the structure in order for them to be successful in the classroom and learn to self-regulate themselves.
