Phonemic awareness is being able to know and understand the individual sounds in the words that are spoken (National Center of Improving Literacy, 2022). Phonemic awareness is a skill developed by auditory. Being able to manipulate individual sounds is key and creates development in reading skills. Phonemic awareness encourages readers to be able to decode words by understanding different sounds of letters isolating sounds and the deletion of sounds to create different words. An example is ball starts with /b/ sound.

Phonics include letters and their sounds. Phonics connects spoken and written words to create a connection. This skill helps a child develop spelling and decoding words. To become a fluent reader, it is important to understand sounds and the corresponding words. This helps the child decode words, spell words, and make connections to understand words that are unfamiliar. An example is B makes the /b/ sound.

According to the University of Oregon, “fluency is the ability to read text accurately, quickly, and with proper expression (n.d.)” Fluency while reading is a skill when reading becomes more automatic. Readers that are fluent can read without struggling to decode each word. Fluency fosters development of reading due to the focus of attention on meaning of what is being read then focusing on decoding.
