The food brings people together, in feasts, parties and when someone shares their catch. A hunter contributes their share and their mother or their spouse holds a get together to eat what was provided, alupajaaq or amirruqturiaq. Alupajaaq is when people get together to eat seal meat and amirruq is the tail of a beluga whale that women eat, as family and friends and fellow community members. -Jean

Community wellness

Traditional food is harvested by hunters who provide for families and sometimes the community. It can be a respected hunter who share their catches to an event like a community feast. Or they can have a group of hunters by an association who provides equipment to hunt for the whole community. When people gather for a feast it is a fun event for everyone. They socialize and share their happiness with each other. It is also good for them to get together and eat as Inuit say the food tastes better when they all eat together.

Deanna
