Her Journey with Identity vs. Confusion

Lady Bird's constant experimentation with different styles, friendships, and romantic relationships reflects this search for identity. Her attempts at befriending popular, less genuine individuals and brief romance with the popular Kyle are reflective of this search.

Her conflict with her mother, Marion, further highlights this stage as she challenges authority and seeks independence. She is unsure of exactly what she wants and it causes her to butt heads with those she's closest to. Lady Bird's desire to escape her hometown and attend college on the East Coast represents her yearning for a new identity and a fresh start. Ultimately, the film explores how Lady Bird navigates this stage and emerges with a stronger sense of self.

The stage of Identity vs. Confusion fits Lady Bird's character extremely well. The film captures her journey of self-discovery as she experiments with different identities, challenges authority, and seeks independence.

Her conflicts with her mother, her exploration of friendships and romantic relationships, and her desire for a life beyond her hometown all align perfectly with the core themes of this stage and provide a relatable and compelling portrayal of adolescent identity formation.

While Erikson's framework provides ample tools for understanding Lady Bird's experiences, one cannot overlook the entirety of her character. It mainly puts more emphasis on individual development than on culture, society, and generation, which influence Lady Bird quite a bit as well.

The movie also doesn't cover the entirety of her youth, stages of which Erikson believes have extreme importance in ones later development.
