Time in Advance (T.Lee's Summary)

This story takes place in a future time when one can serve time in prison in advance for a murder that they intend to commit when they finish their sentence, thus giving them a "license to kill one person without further punishment". The "time in advance" is served at a 50% discount from the actual sentence time that the crime would normally incur. People who serve this time in advance are called "pre-criminals". The catch to enjoying this 50% discount is that, while in prison, one has to do hard but necessary labor in many dangerous off-world environments where most prisoners end up either dead or maimed for life. Thus, one's odds at surviving this time served in advance are slim indeed. This story is about two such pre-criminals who have just returned to Earth from serving their seven-year, off-world sentences in advance.

The two pre-criminals in question are Nick Crandall and Otto Henck. Nick served his time in prison so he could kill his ex-employer, Stephanson, who had stolen an invention from him and gotten rich from it. Otto served his time in prison so he could kill his ex-wife Elsa, who had treated him extremely badly for many years. After being released from prison and returning to Earth, Nick and Otto went their separate ways to do their foul deeds.

Nick checked into a posh hotel and was soon visited by his ex-wife Polly. She thought he had served his sentence so he could kill her in revenge, so she preemptively confessed about cheating on him several times during their marriage and begged forgiveness. He was shocked by this revelation!

Then his brother Dan visited him and was going to kill him with a blaster, but, fortunately for Nick, Dan couldn't bring himself to kill his own brother. Dan thought that Nick had served his sentence so he could kill Dan in revenge, so Dan preemptively confessed that he had been one of Polly's main lovers and begged forgiveness for cheating on him with his wife. Nick was shocked by this revelation as well.

In addition to these mind-shattering revelations, at different times, two different strangers approached him and offered to pay him well to kill their enemies for them to better their own lives. Disgusted, Nick turned them down without a second thought.

Finally, he called Stephanson, his main target of revenge, on a video phone. By this time, Nick was so disappointed in his fellow man and so numbed by his own blind naivete that he told Stephanson that he had given up on his quest for vengeance and didn't want to kill him anymore. Stephanson was somewhat shocked... and then relieved to the point that he voluntarily offered to give Nick a percentage of the company's profits to reimburse him for the way he has cheated Nick out of his fame and riches. So his friends turned out to be his enemies, and his enemy turned out to be his friend.

To cap off (conclude) the denouement, Otto came to visit Nick in his hotel room at the end of the story and told him that his ex-wife and intended murder victim Elsa has died in a freak accident the month before. So he, Otto, had served seven years in prison for nothing. What cruel irony. The story ends with both men reflecting on the value of life and the sacrifices they've made to arrive at this point in their lives.
