Musicians often quote specific lines from other songs while performing a completely different song. This is particularly noticeable in Jazz, and the possibly the most famous example of quoting is 'the lick', a phrase which has no clear origin but has nonetheless been played by some of the most prominent jazz musicians in history.

Using a video which shows jazz musicians quoting this musical phrase in various ways, students can analyse how each musician changes the phrase to suit the song they're playing. They can then use this analysis to help quote this phrase (or possibly another) in a contemporary song (from the last 20 years).
