I think the border symbolizes the line between O’Brien life before the war and his life during and after the war. The border represents all he left behind when going to war, his family, his friends, his neighbors, his whole life just exactly how he was viewing them calling him a traitor if he did cross the border into Canada. Crossing the border would mean leaving his past and his future by going to war and not crossing the border would mean giving into his embarrassment and fear of exile and isolation and the end of what could have been his life away from the war in canada.

I think the purpose and effect of this shift is to put the reader into the story while also relaying that his own specific experience and the feelings that he felt at the time are not limited to his life and we can even experience in our own lives. The use of shifting perspective also helps in creating a sense of empathy with readers who might have felt the same anxiety or embarrassment that O’Brien describes in the chapter.

I think the border could symbolize O’brien’s conscience not knowing the right thing to do. O’Brien began to think about going to Canada to escape the war. He feared walking away from his life and the people in it. He feared how people would view him if he ran away. Although his conscience told him to run he felt tempted to go to war.

I think this metaphor calls out O’Brien’s indecisiveness. By using the phrase not biting I feel like it highlights the fact that O’Brien is aware of his two choices, but by sitting there crying is not making a decision. Elroy's statement is basically saying to O’Brien you need to make a choice, you need to stop running and decide right here right now and show if you are truly brave in this difficult circumstance.
