I just watched the video Black Self/White World and it was sobering to hear stories from the speaker that you are familiar with as well growing up in racist society. I connect with the indigenous groups as well for that yearned sense of belonging and that you are "home" somewhere in this countries. What if you never felt that connection to home anywhere?

I liked exploring the Project 562 website. I can see myself using some of the free curriculum in my classroom; when studying Native nations, a lot of students have preconceived notions that Native Americans are not a part of the US today.

I read "Words Matter: Illegal vs Undocumented Immigrants". What I came away with was a nagging question of why some folks struggle (or refuse) to change the language they use and why others are able to be more flexible. I am thinking about the ways I can encourage flexibility and avoid adding to the negative discourse by modeling it in my own word choice, which is an easy place for anyone to start.

I was taking the "Cultural Competence Checklist" self-reflection and got stuck pretty early on. It says, "I am aware that in order to learn more about others I need to understand and be prepared to share my own culture." I am always eager to learn from and about others, but less ready to share about aspects of myself. I have always felt culture-less. There's never been a cultural identity in either sides of my family. Family traditions that were passed down were not related to a culture, language, religion, or ethnicity. What do I have to share? I wonder if there are others who feel culture-less?

Food for more thought.

I watched the video "A Conversation with Native Americans about Race". I was surprised to learn that the government renamed the Native American tribes or clans because they "couldn't pronounce the actual names" (ie. "Dzil Ligai N'dee" became "Apache"). I never knew that. It is also sad to listen to the personal stories and the impact of how our country is actively assimilating Native Americans with total disregard for their cultures and ethnicity. I also loved

Skiumtlx's comment "My existence is resistance". Very powerful.

I took the "Cultural Competence Checklist" and spent a few minutes trying to find a breakdown of what particular scores meant. It was like I was trying to see how good I was. I realized that maybe a better way to use the information was to reflect on some of the areas where I need to grow a bit. One cool thing that came out of my search for a score breakdown is that I found a Cultural Competence Checklist for SLPs and audiologists.

Reflecting on the "Importance of accurately pronouncing another's given name" reminded me of my experience co-teaching in an ELA class a few years ago (with a fabulous teacher (AC :) ). I asked a student how to pronounce his name, even though he asked people to call him "Edward." Evidently, in the past, people didn't say his name correctly, so he gave up and renamed himself. It didn't sit right with me or the teacher. Therefore, both of us consistently and accurately pronounced his given name daily ( I hoped to model for the other students the right way to address him). A small thing but I hoped it made a difference to him.
