We started the class today with massaging our bodies. We did this to loosen up our muscles. We then mainly focused on our use of breath during our improvisation explorations. We watched the second years first as they had had experience in this before and then we tried this out for our selves. I found this really useful and I think that using my breath while focusing on different dynamics really made my explorations flow smoothly.

In today’s session we were given a task to work with the second years to learn and perform thier solos. I was partnered with Tom Jones and the person he had picked for his solo was Hofesh Schetur so his solo has a lot of different dynamics in it. I learnt a lot from doing this task as this was a very new style for me and I was a little bit out of my comfort zone but it felt good to learn something new. Although I struggled with some of the choreography I felt like Tom was very good at explaining the dynamics and the movements so the more I learnt the easier it became. I also learnt a lot when performing Toms solo infront of the class as Tom pointed out that throughout the dance I seemed to look at Kyle a lot who had also learnt the routine. Even though I knew what I was doing I feel like this was a confidence response for me and in order to improve more I need to work on being more independent and using my focus.

Today we were partnered with the second years for a lot of the contact improv. I worked with Cerys Lewis. In one of the exercises we had to lead across the floor with one body part leading and our partner had to touch one of our body parts, experimenting with the relationship between ourselves and our partner. I felt like I learnt a lot from this exercise as I mainly lead with my legs and when I was restricted to using my arms more I get a bit confused so I would like to work on this so that my actions differentiate. However I felt like my confidence has improved a lot more in this class and I move a lot more freely when I don’t think about my next move as much.

In our improvisation session today we worked on applying what we had learnt in the last half term. Although i found going into the centre and performing infront of my peers scary it really helped me understand the movement and the dynamics a lot more. I want to continue building on my confidence to perform a lot more because i think this will hugely benefit my dancing in situations like this where you are just thrown in.

In today’s session I was completely out of my comfort zone for the majority of it but I enjoyed this because I felt like it pushed me more. When dancing in the centre today exploring and using set improvisation I was really nervous and I felt like this held me back a bit. I asked some of the members in my group to give me some feedback and they also agreed that it is obvious that I’m nervous when dancing but they liked some of my exploration.

Today in our movement sharing, we had the chance to perform and show the new skills that we have learnt in our Movement/Improv classes since September. We went on stage, found a space and started with a breath, which is how we normally warm up in our class. We then began our crayon exploration which is something that for me, has majorly improved since September as at first I felt very awkward and unconfident and now I feel like I can really picture the crayon and my movement flows a lot more in the space. After this we formed a line at the back of the stage and we were called out, either to be involved with a duet or to perform an improvised solo using actions, space, relationships and dynamics. My task was to perform a duet and the task that I set myself to help my improvisation was still to imagine the crayon because I think I work well with this. I think it is obvious how much I have come along confidence wise because if I was asked to do this in September I think that I would’ve felt very nervous but during my performance I felt confident and I was happy with how my exploration went.

In our lesson today we started with our normal crayon explaration warm up and then went on to focus on certain body parts. We worked on exposing, hiding, focusing and connecting our body parts in moments of our improvisation. I tried to think about how I could move with different dynamics also. Then, our task was to move towards the nearest person to us and carry on with our exploration but working with our partner and there negative and positive space. The closest person to me at this time was Kyle and I think that we worked well together during this exploration. We managed to find oppertunites and moments of contact such as lifts and weight transference/shifts. We then watched eachother during our explorations and tried to work out which body parts we were working with. Kyle and I both managed to work out the body parts that we were focusing on and then our next task was to connect with eachothers body parts. I enjoyed these explorations and tasks today and I think they will help me a lot when there is an oppertunity for me to show an improvised performance either in a duet or a solo.

First session back in improv/movement.

In today’s class we learnt how to use focusing on a body part in improvisation. Although we had touched on this before we learnt how to do this a lot more in depth. We started on with a normal exploration and then Craig would call out different tasks for us to use. An example of one of our tasks would be ‘focus on your right elbow, either focusing on it or trying to hide it’ or ‘focus on your left hip and your right shoulder, try and find a relationship with these body parts’. I really feel like these tasks have helped me with my improvisations and now I know in future I can set my self tasks similar to these to improve my explorations.

Today we worked in groups of 4 to create a structured improvisation using each one of the actions from the board. I worked with Chloe Harrison, Morgan Mcclennan and Kyle Ball and I think that we worked well together. I think this lesson has really benifitted me and I will continue using the action slide that is below from the board in my other lessons such as choreography. We focused on creating pieces using actions.

Today we started with a crayon action exploration warm up through the space. We then went on to travel down the room one by one using the floor with our movement. I really struggled with this as I feel like I was very nervous and I just repeated a lot of my movement. I think that to improve in this I need to overcome the nerves and just focus on the task.
