I am Curt Bonk. I was born in Milwaukee (West Allis actually) and have lived in West Allis, Greenfield, Brookfield, Waukesha, Whitewater, and Madison, Wisconsin as well as Morgantown, WV, Tampa, FL, Center Grove/Indianapolis, IN, and, for the past 32 years, I have been in Bloomington, Indiana. My undergrad degree is in accounting...what a boring topic that is. I was a CPA and corporate controller long long ago in a faraway land.

My master's and Ph.D. are from the U of Wisconsin Madison in Educational Psychology (with a double major in human learning and human development). In addition, I had a minor in ed tech. Before grad school, I worked at many companies, including Automated Systems, Inc. (ASI) which made the densest printed circuit boards in world. Think Nvidia but decades earlier. Working at ASI got me interested in educational technology. So, I took TV and correspondence courses in psychology to get into grad school since I had taken only 1 psych course as an undergrad.

My homepage is at: https://curtbonk.com/ and my podcast show, Silver Lining for Learning, is at https://silverliningforlearning.org/

My podcast team and I at Silver Lining for Learning (SLL) have been podcasting since March 21, 2020. Today was episode #204 on "Migrant Education and Global Citizenship on the Thai/Myanmar Border." We started SLL when COVID hit to provide some PD for educators during COVID and thought we would last 2 or 3 months. We are still going.

I went running before the first show. I was visiting my son in Portland at the time. I ran for 4 years every day until March 21, 2024 (1,462 days in a row) and then I had an elective surgery. I went running at midnight and had surgery 7 hours later. I started running again an hour before the total eclipse on April 8, 2024 while walking my dog Oliver in dress pants and a shirt and tie. Tomorrow will be day 140 of the new streak.

Best of luck in this class. We will see how it evolves.

I am a social studies teacher in Kittery, Maine. For hobbies I enjoy spending time with my family, reading (my favorite book this year has been Will of the Many), and cooking. As for places that I like to visit, my family and I have visited Disney World for the past several spring vacations. The photo of me is of me and my daughter there last year. I also enjoy going back to Cincinnati and long road trips in general. My family and I are planning a 2-3 week trip out west next summer.

I am very excited about being able to work with everyone and learn about this program. I am originally from Potomac Maryland, which in fact is fifteen minutes outside Washington D.C. Some of my hobbies include, fishing, swimming, and lifting.

I am used to having all my undergraduate classes in person. It will be very interesting to see how schooling is from a complete zoom class and online learning experience. I am very excited to learn and work with all my peers who are enrolled in this class. I can already see we have so many great introductions and life experiences so far!

Hi there! My name is Kate Wallin, and I am from North Little Rock, Arkansas. After receiving my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education in 2020, I taught 4th graders for the following four years. I absolutely loved getting to know the 9-10 year olds that learned in my classroom, and I loved learning from them. These last four years have taught me so much about teaching, learning, and professionalism. I'm grateful that I was able to pursue my love for teaching there and learn new methods to reach a variety of learning styles.

Last year, I started researching different ways I might be able to apply my love for teaching and found an article about instructional design. I was immediately intrigued and as I started to research more about it, I knew this was something I wanted to pursue. I am thrilled to learn from and alongside you all!

Outside of teaching, I love playing volleyball, hanging out with my friends, and reading books/listening to audiobooks (I love fantasy/adventure novels). I'm working on keeping myself active, so some of my time is spent at the gym trying to get into a good workout routine. :)

Nice to meet you all!

Hi everyone, my name is Rachel. I'm in my first semester of the IST certificate program. I'm originally from the suburbs of Chicago, but I currently live in Santiago, Chile.

I graduated in 2014 from the University of Illinois from a double major in Psychology and Spanish. After graduating, I worked in Chicago for a few years before moving to Seoul, South Korea, to teach ESL. There, I started learning Korean. Between learning Korean and teaching English, I discovered my passion for language learning and education, and decided to dedicate myself to the field.

In 2019, I moved to Chile with the intention of staying for about a year and practicing my Spanish, but here I am still in Santiago!! Chile is a beautiful country with so much natural beauty to explore (a long coastline, deserts in the north and glaciers in the south). I live here with my husband Guillermo (we recently tied the knot) and our dog, Luna.

My hobbies are learning languages - I am pretty fluent in Spanish now and I'm still working on my Korean whenever I can, and I'd love to learn more in the future! I also love running, hiking, and bike riding; basically endurance sports in general. Looking forward to getting to know everyone better!

Nice to meet you, folks! My name is Juhyun, and I’m in my first semester of the IST Ph.D. program. I’m originally from Seoul, Korea, and I just moved to Bloomington about two weeks ago. As a newcomer to this town, I’m really enjoying the small, peaceful college-town vibe here.

I graduated from Seoul National University of Education with a BA in Elementary Education in 2019 and a Master’s in Mathematics Education in 2023.

I have five years of teaching experience in Seoul as an inservice elementary school teacher. Since I started teaching during COVID, it was almost natural for me to become interested in how technology can enhance the learning experience. I believe students learn best by doing, and technology serves as an excellent facilitator in that process.

My current research interest is in the integration of computational thinking with STEM education. I’ve designed and taught innovative school curricula in Seoul and several STEM classes for upper elementary students. I hope to leverage my teaching experience to bridge the gap between practice and academia!

Aside from my academic interests, I love traveling around the world. I enjoy trying local foods, making new friends, and experiencing nature. If someone asked me about the best country I’ve ever visited, I would say Australia—not only because my sister lives there, but also because of the amazing weather, friendly people, and great coffee and beer!

I’m very excited to start my first semester at IU and look forward to getting to know everyone here!

Hello all!

My name is Sarah Braunstein and I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio. I moved to Indiana in 2017 to pursue by Bachelor of Arts degree in Multilingual Studies at Butler University. I graduated into the pandemic in August 2020 and began my Masters program in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA), here, at Indiana University Bloomington. In 2021, I decided to pursue the passion for library sciences and information institutions I had ignited while working as a student worker at the Irwin Library at Butler, by pursuing a Master of Library Science, in conjunction with my HESA degree. In 2022, I graduated with my Masters of Science in Education, as well as a Graduate Certificate in Institutional Research. In 2023, I graduated with my Master of Library Science degree.

After a mad dash of schooling, I was unsure of how I wanted to combine my passions into a profession and decided to take a hiatus from education and serve as the Assistant Director of Career Coaching at IUB's Luddy School. This 10-month long stint helped me realize that where my interests lie are in the intersection between education, technology, and information. Because of this, I am currently pursuing a PhD in Informatics with a minor in Instructional Systems Technology.

My research interests at this time surround corporate implications of online learning, such as in the onboarding process. I am hoping to combine my professional interests with my love of themed entertainment and one day do instructional design for an entertainment company.

Outside of my academic interests, I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to do it a lot. This Fall, I am going to get to visit Alaska and am so excited to be able to share what I see when I return. In addition to this, I've acquired a crochet addiction and enjoy Pure Barre in my free time.

I'm looking forward to learning more from and about you all! Here's to an exciting Fall semester!

Hi All,

My name is Sam Teye and I am originally from an industrial city, Tema in the Greater Accra Region in Ghana. I have a BS in Physics from Ghana and an MS in Physics, from Ball State University where my research was focused on Nuclear Astrophysics.

I moved to Bloomington after graduate school to teach Math and Physics at IvyTech Community College, Bloomington. My interest in teaching stems from my experiences growing up in Ghana tutoring kids at a younger age. It was during my undergraduate studies working as a Teaching Assistant that I realized how much I enjoyed it. I’ve been teaching for well over 8 years now educating the younger generation in my field.

I work here at IU as the undergraduate lab director for the Physics department, so this keeps me busy during the day. My favorite part of the year is during science fest where we demonstrate cool physics to the community. You should check us out this year in October.

I have over the years developed and consulted on course development in STEM, each offering valuable insights into effective instructional design which has sparked an interest in instructional design and technology. I am interested in how this will align with my current role as a Lab director.

I try to have a “social life’ and for me that’s playing soccer at Twin lakes and BUGS (not professionally) but good enough to win a local league in town. I also do a little bit of music and have performed some of my original songs at Rotary Club Conferences in Indianapolis, Ivy Tech Community College and more recently at my departments holiday party. I look forward to learning from you all in this course.

Hi there!

My name is Michael Rucker, and I am excited to join this course. I currently serve as a Residence Life Coordinator - Student Development at IU, where I supervise the Resident Assistant and Graduate Assistant staff and support residents at Union Street Center. Before working at IU, I wore a few hats, including being a K-12 music teacher, a Career Transition Specialist, and selling life insurance. My professional passion is in learning and development, which has driven me towards the field of instructional technology, where I can create impactful learning experiences outside the traditional classroom.

Outside of my professional life, I am passionate about staying active and spending time with my energetic blue heeler, Banjamin “Banjo” Darius Rucker. He loves to go hiking and play tug-of-war for hours on end. I practice Taekwondo and Kali, recently started running as a hobby (completed my first 5K at Brown County in June), and I am a musician at heart. I enjoy playing my aerophone (an electronic wind instrument) and piano. I look forward to learning and growing alongside all of you this semester.

Take care!

Michael

Hi everyone!

My name is Rachel Mohr. I am very excited to be starting the M.S.Ed. in Instructional Systems Technology program this fall. I am originally from Antioch, Illinois, a small, northern suburb of Chicago. However, I currently live in St. Louis, Missouri with my French bulldog, Millie :) I have lived here since graduating from Saint Louis University, where I completed my Bachelor's in Elementary Education and also competed for their Division I field hockey team.

Post-undergrad, I taught 4th grade for a brief time, and then moved into an Academic Coordinator position in college athletics at Lindenwood University. In this role, I oversaw academic planning and monitoring for eight of the university’s athletic programs (while also working towards my first Master’s degree in Higher Education). After four years at Lindenwood, I moved into my current position: Head of Academics and Coordinator of Operations and Programming for TPH St. Louis. TPH is an academy-style program, offering elite ice hockey training and academic support for students in grades 6-12. Outside of work, I am passionate about fitness and am part of a wonderful, close knit community at my gym. I work part-time hours at the gym, in addition to running their social media accounts.

I am thrilled to begin coursework in this field, as I am looking to pursue a career as an instructional designer. All of my past roles have involved some level of instructional content creation, which has always been my favorite aspect of working in education. I am excited to combine my background in education with new knowledge of IST and design skills in order to open doors for new professional opportunities. I am looking forward to learning alongside each of you this semester!

Hello everyone! I’m Professor Hui-Chin Vicky Yeh, and it’s a pleasure to be here as a Visiting Scholar under the mentorship of Dr. Bonk. My academic journey started at Indiana University, where I earned my degree in Language Education in October 2003.

My heart lies in exploring the latest advancements in educational technology, especially integrating AI, robotics, AR, and VR to transform language teaching and learning. I’m passionate about making a meaningful impact by supporting educators and guiding young scholars as they innovate in teaching and push the boundaries of research. I’m also deeply interested in the role of multimodality in content creation, which adds a rich, engaging layer to the English learning experience. Additionally, I’m excited to foster international connections through telecollaboration, as it not only enhances language exchange but also deepens our cultural understanding.

Thank you for this opportunity to join this class—I’m genuinely looking forward to connecting with each of you and share what I have learned in the past 2 decades.
