In 1945, the Japanese empire was divided at the end of World War II, splitting Korea in half. Days before Japan surrendered, the U.S. was given the task of representing the U.S. occupation zone in East Asia. Without consulting any Koreans, they randomly decided to cut Korea roughly in half along the 38th parallel of latitude, ensuring that the capital city of Seoul (the largest city in the peninsula) would be in the American section. The trust administrators from the U.S. and the USSR were supposed to arrange for nation wide elections to reunify Korea in 1948, but neither side trusted the other. The U.S. wanted the entire peninsula to be democratic and capitalist while the Soviets wanted it all to be communist. The picture below shows the border between North and South Korea.

Korea is a country where many known religions such as Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism and Islam, peacefully coexist with Shamanism. Buddhism and Confucianism have been more influential than any others upon the life of the Korean people and over half of the country’s listed cultural heritage are related with the two religions. The practice of Buddhism began circa 372, and since then, at least 10,000 temples have been built across the country. The oldest religion in South Korea today is Shamanism. Shamanism is the belief that the natural world is filled with spirits, both helpful and harmful, that can be addressed by people with special powers called shamans. Herbal medicines, dances, chants and other ceremonies mark the work of shamans, most of whom are women. Although very little people believe in those religious legends today, they do accept old beliefs about the natural world and use many ancient herbal remedies. The picture below is from a religious Korean festival.

Korean Flag Meaning

There is a lot of meaning in the Korean flag, also called Taegeukgi. The flag has 3 parts: the white background, the red and blue circle in the center and four trigrams, one in each corner of the flag. The white background of the flag means peace. The red and blue circle in the center refers to the origin of all things in the universe. The blue part is called 'Eum' (or 'Yin' in Chinese), and represents all negative aspects of the balance while the red part is called 'Yang' and represents all the positive aspects. The circle itself symbolizes unity, combining the negative and positive, while the Yin and Yang represent the duality. The four trigrams at the corners ('Kwe' in Korean) also represent the concepts of opposites and balance. Representing the four classical elements, the trigrams are heaven (upper right - 3 solid bars), fire (bottom right corner - 2 solid bars with split middle bar), water (top left corner - 2 split bars with solid middle bar) and earth (bottom left - 3 split bars). The picture below is the South Korean Flag.

Koreans believe that health and illness alike come from the food they consume and how they eat it. This idea has played a crucial role in the development of traditional Korean medicine, whose basic principle is that we should use medicine if food doesn't work. In simple terms, the traditional and common remedy is food first, then medicine if food isn't the cure. Koreans also like to use fermentation so their food's taste is improved. they normally ferment their food for several months. Koreans cuisine normally consists of rice, vegetables, and meats. The most popular Korean dish (which is eaten in almost every meal) is: Kimchi, seasoned vegetables and salt. The picture below is traditional Cabbage Kimchi.
