Yüzölçümü 182 kilometrekare olan ilçenin arazisi genelde tarıma elverişli topraklardan oluşur. Şehir merkezinde ise 3 iskele ve liman tesisinde yük gemileri için yeterlidir. Yap-İşlet-Devret modeli ile yapılan liman tesislerinde orta ve daha büyük ölçekli çeşitli yük gemileri yanaşabilmekte ve yükleme-boşaltma yapabilmektedir.
