This infrastructure spending will boost the economy for the next few decades by increasing productivity and jobs. Economists say spending too much too fast will could increase our debt load and lead to higher inflation and interest rates.

This article is relevant because it shares the United States wants to develop infrastructure to increase productivity and profits. This brought to mind the Modernization theory. We are at stage 5 “High Mass Consumption” because we are at a high output, have higher income, and increased consumer expenditure.

Post #1 (September 17, 2016) - Globalization and Unequal Exchange

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/18/opinion/sunday/put-globalization-to-work-for-democracies.html?_r=0
Globalization is undermining democracy because trade agreements, tariffs and sanctions are outside of control of national voters. They’ve done a poor job making middle/lower class workers feel like their interests are protected. This caused leaders like Trump to become popular and decrease the globalism expansion.

This article shows how globalization has deepened the cultural and economic divisions of countries since some countries are able to take advantage of globalization while others aren’t. This reminded me of core, periphery, and semi-periphery countries in Worlds-systems theory. There’s an unequal exchange where the core takes from periphery, leading to those countries being underdevelopment.

This project will help drug victims and benefit the vision they have for the Philippines. Although the Chinese are funding this project, they criticize China for not fixing the real problem of sending methamphetamine into the Philippines.
This article is relevant because it is focusing on improving the lives of those in the Philippines. We learned that Human Development Index measures development through health, education, and living standards. This project will increase life expectancy, educate more individuals, and create more opportunity for work.

Large groups have been bypassed by the economic recovery and everyone has felt the effects of the sluggish economy.

This article describes the recent unpopularity of globalization due to loss of identity and status. This reminded me of the lecture when Dr. Sowers asked us if we feel like we belong to something larger than our own society. We agreed that we do because we are shopping at stores like Wal-Mart and buying American-made cars.

He states that now is not the time to pull back into nationalism and put up walls to free trade. Many voters disagree and fear these agreements will cause them to lose their constitutional rights since the agreement sends complaints to a corporate tribunal whose decision supersedes our own courts.

This article reminded me of the Globalization Project and Hayek’s ideas we discussed in class. Hayek believed in a free market and Obama is pushing for global corporations to run the world.
