Summary of Scotland's Rashin-Coatie

Once upon a time there was a father who had two daughters. The older of the two was ugly and ill natured, but the youngest was bonnie and beautiful. However, the ugly one was the favorite to the father and mother. So, the oldest used the younger one in every way. They sent her into the woods to herd cattle.

Amongst the cattle was red calf. One day the calf told the girl to get the porridge and dog and come with him.

The girl followed the calf into the woods, and they came to a house with a nice dinner ready for them. After they were done eating, they went back to herding.

Every day the calf feasted the girl on dainties, and she grew bonnier. This disgusted the mother, father, and the ugly sister. They thought that this would take away her beauty, so they watched and watched until they saw the calf take the girl to the feast. They decided the calf needed to be killed. Not only that, but the girl was to kill the calf with an axe. The ugly sister was to hold the head of the calf while the youngest daughter, who loved him, was to give the blow and kill him.

The youngest daughter began to cry, but the calf told her not to cry for he had a plan. His plan was for her to come down with the axe on the oldest daughter's head who was holding his head. The youngest daughter would them jump on the calf's back and run away together. The day finally came everything was ready. The ugly girl was holding the calf's head and the bonnie girl armed with the axe. So, the youngest sister came down on the ugly sister's head and jumped on the calf and ran away. They ran into a meadow where there were a lot of flowers. The girl had very little clothes, so they made a Coatie for her out of the flowers. They then set off again and traveled for a while until they came to the king's house. They walked in and asked the king and his wife if they wanted a servant. The mistress said she wanted a kitchen maid, and that she would take Rashin-Coatie.

Rashin-Coatie said she would stay if they kept the calf too, so they did. So, she and the calf stayed at the king's house, and everyone was impressed with her. They said that she was to make dinner while the rest of them went to the kirk. After they had left the calf asked her if she would like to go. The girl said he would, but she had no clothes and could not leave the dinner. The calf told her that he would give her clothes and make the dinner too. The calf left and came back with a beautiful dress, all silky and satin, with a nice pair of slippers. The girl put on the dress and said that she was very grateful for the beautiful gifts she recieved.

She went to the kirk and nobody recognized her. They all wondered who the bonnie lady was. As soon as the young prince saw her, he fell in love. Before the prince could figure out who she was, she left because she had to get home before the rest and to look after the dinner.

The prince tried to stop her from leaving, but she jumped past him. When she jumped, she lost one of her shoes. The prince kept the shoe. She was able to get home, and the folks said that the dinner was very nice.

The prince wanted to know who the bonnie lady was, so he sent out a servant and said that all the women were to try on the shoe and the one the shoe fit he would marry her. The servant went to so many houses and had no luck finding the girl because the shoe was so neat and little. At last, he came to a henwife's house who had a daughter. At first the show didn't fit but she trimmed her toes and squeezed the shoe on until it fit. The prince wasn't happy because he knew this girl wasn't the right one, but since he promised he would marry the girl who fit the shoe he had to marry her.

When the wedding day came, they were riding to the kirk when a little bird flew by saying that the right girl was in the kitchen of the father's home.

The prince turned back around and there she was. He knelt down to her at once. She tried on the shoe, and it was a perfect fit. The prince and Rashin-Coatie then got married and lived happily ever after. They built a house for the red calf too, who had been so nice to her.

Similarities to Cinderella

One similarity that Scotland's Rashin-Coatie has to the original Cinderella is they both had some magic/fairy godmother. In the original Cinderella she had a fairy godmother who helped her get ready for the ball by gifting her a dress an slippers. Rashin-Coatie had a calf who gifted her a beautiful dress and slippers.

Another similarity in both of these fairy tales is that after the ladies lost their shoe the prince went all over town to look for the beautiful girl by having all the girls in the village try on the shoe.

One last similarity between the original Cinderella and Scotland's Rashin-Coatie is that both girls were seen as less than in their families. Both girls were constantly overlooked.

One difference between the original Cinderella and Scotland's Rashin-Coatie is the violence used. In Cinderella there was no violence being used at all. In Scotland's Rashin-Coatie there was violence. The girl cut off her older sister's head with an axe.

Another difference between both fairy tales were the fairy godmothers. In the original Cinderella the fairy godmother was a woman in a big dress with a wand. In Scotland's Rashin-Coatie the calf was considered to be the "fairy godmother".

The last difference between these two-fairy tales were the way the Cinderella's of the stories met the prince. In the original Cinderella and the prince met a beautiful ball. Scotland's Rashin-Coatie met at a kirk which is a church.

In Scotland porridge is a really popular food. Porridge is talked about a lot in the story when the youngest daughter would go to the woods to herd the cattle, her family would give her porridge and whey to try and get her fat and ugly. Later in the story the calf would give the girl dainties which were like a delicacy in Scotland.

The red calf relates to Scotland because a lot of people in Scotland tend to have red hair. Also, something that the red calf symbolizes is Jesus Christ. In Scotland a red calf's blood cleansed people and allowed them to be in God's presence.
