In the poem "Southbound on the Freeway" by May Swenson, the author uses many techniques to create a feeling of suspense. For instance, when Swenson is describing the creatures she uses imagery. The text states, "Through the transparent parts you can see their guts." This gives a creepy and gory image that makes you have a feeling of suspense. You start to wonder what kind of creature would be transparent and what would the creature look like.

In the poem "Southbound on the Freeway" by May Swenson, the author uses many techniques such as Imagery and Situational Irony". The poem showed these examples to describe items in the poem and add a plot twist at the end. The text states "Through the transparent parts you can see their guts." this is an example of imagery because it paints a picture of what the creatures look like. When reading you aren't sure what to think, you may picture a scary monster or an everyday object. In the end we never know what society this is.

In the poem ¨Southbound on the freeway¨ by May Swenson, the author creates feelings of suspense by using imagery and dramatic Irony. An example of this is is ¨Through the transparent parts

you can see their guts.¨ This gives the reader and idea of what the object looks like and leaves the reader thinking. He uses Irony by saying he has eyes on the back of his head but that is not true. ¨They have four eyes.

The two in the back are red. ¨

In the poem "Southbound on the Freeway" by May Swenson the author creates suspense with situational irony. For instance, way the author uses situational irony when she describes the cars as terrible creatures. One example from the text is, "Their feet are round and roll on diagrams--or long

measuring tapes--dark with white lines. Are these creatures cars?!

They have four eyes.

The two in the back are red.

Sometimes you can see a 5-eyed

one, with a red eye turning

They are many of these creatures

on the top of his head.

He must be special-" This situational irony creates susense because now the reader wonder how the cars are monsters to a different society, even though in our modern society the car isn't a monster too us.

For example, one technique the author uses is imagery. The tourist writes, "They have four eyes. The two in the back are red. Sometimes you can see a 5-eyed one, with a red eye turning." This is showing us how the author is envisioning the aliens he encounters on his trip We start to wonder what creature has eyes in the back of his head. This technique is used to create a feeling of suspense.

The tourist describes what sounds like aliens to us but is actually our society and the aliens they are describing are cars and asks the question, are we the brains of technology or is the technology in control?

In the poem "Annabel Lee"by Edgar Allan Poe, the author creates a feeling of suspense through his skillful use of suspense techniques. For example, as he tries to explain the cause of Annabel's death, Poe writes, " “ The angels, not half so happy in heaven/ Went envying her and me-These lines create an uneasy feeling for the reader because it changes their perception of angels being innocent, loving creatures to an image of angry, devious angels wanting to take revenge on the speaker. This also makes the reader fear the power of the angels
