Witnesses from people living in the area and journalists presumed that the british elite soldiers shot into the mass of protesters, without any resistance from the Irish. The british then ground the statement by concluding they felt threatened by the IRA (Irish Republican Army) and therefore had to open fire. 

Many demonstrators were shot to death by British Army paratroopers. 
This violence caused the loss of life for 13 civilians and 26 was shot, but survived the occurrence and 1 died a few months later.
The demonstrators and the victims were all Northern Catholics, and they were marching because of conflicts between catholics and protestants, the catholic had gone on the street that day to protest against what they saw as the protestants discrimination of them.
