My name is Sherly Moreau-Chambers. Port-au-Prince, Haiti is the city where I was born.  A Bachelor of Science is my highest level of education and is the credential which helped me earn my TESOL Certificate that allows me to facilitate ESL Classes to English language learners from all over the world.  My mother’s maiden name is King. She is the person who inspired me the most. Haiti is a place where women change their last name to her husband’s last name when they get married.  In my mother’s case, her new last name became Moreau because that is the last name of her husband.  She no longer uses her maiden’s name, King. Before she got married, her name used to be Raymonde King. Now that she is married, her name is Raymonde Moreau.

 

Paragraph 2:

        My goal for this class is to help my students become better communicators in Standard American English. The four  specific areas to meet this goal are  speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension so that my learners may having more confidence when they hold a conversation with a native speaker as well as non-native speakers.  The first strategy that I will use to reach my goal of better communication in English for my learners is to foster an atmosphere of respect and collaboration in the classroom. Another strategy is to facilitate communicative activities that give the learners plenty of opportunities to practice pronunciation, listening and practice correct stress as well as intonation skills. My final strategy is to give the learners agency so that they will learn how to independently meet their goals while overcoming obstacles in the learning process. 

 

Paragraph 3:  

        An obstacle that makes it challenging to reach my goal of helping my learners becoming better communicators in Standard American English is absenteeism by students.  Another obstacle is a problem to install the application necessary to teach the course with the digital resources. To achieve my goals despite the obstacles, I keep a schedule and allocate time slots to each task while coming prepared with back up activities that do not require technology.  For the obstacle of absenteeism, I provid  all learners access to online tools that allows them to independently check their own workbook and textbook homework as well as class work that may have been missed due to illness, emergency conflict, or work obligation conflict during a session. The online tools allow all learners the opportunity to catch up with those who are able to attend all classes in person.
