The baggy clothes style was started by black American crip and blood gang members.
It all started in the 1970’s at the Los Angeles county jail in Los Angeles, California.
When people got arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department and once they arrived at the Los Angeles County jail. The Los Angeles county sheriffs would take the inmates belts and shoe laces away. The reason for this procedure was because some inmates would use their belts and shoe laces to kill themselves. There were inmates who didn’t want to do time in jail or prison so they would commit suicide. So the Los Angeles County Sheriffs started taking belts and shoe laces away from all inmates.

The first major hip-hop deejay was DJ Kool Herc (Clive Campbell), an 18-year-old immigrant who introduced the huge sound systems of his native Jamaica to inner-city parties.

Leading up to the 1970s was a disaster on American economics. The recession marked the end of the post-World War II economic boom, and the United States experienced a lasting period of stagflation—a combination of high unemployment and inflation.

Voters held Washington politicians responsible for the economic state of the country. Upset with federal policies, they ousted President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and voted in former Hollywood actor and California Gov. Ronald Reagan as president, a position he held from 1981 to 1989.

the American economy was suffering through a deep recession. Business bankruptcies rose sharply compared to previous years. Farmers also suffered due to a decline in agricultural exports, falling crop prices, and rising interest rates. But by 1983, the economy had rebounded and enjoyed a sustained period of growth as the annual inflation rate stayed below 5 percent for the remainder of the 1980s and part of the 1990s.

MOFFATT, Mike. 2019. ‘The 1980s American Economy’. ThoughtCo [online].

A study shows that 40% of the total hip-hop audience is African American which is more than double the population of the Caucasian audience per capita. However, research also says that very few people in the hip-hop demographics are above the age of 65. This statistic shows that mostly young adults and teens listen to hip-hop and that the older generation that grew up on totally different music don’t listen to this. Another strong statistic is that 24 million confirmed people between the ages of 19-34, from a range of nationalities, ethnic groups and religions, make up most of the core demographic.

ROMANCARGAVA, rick. 2017. ‘Week 5: Demographics in Hip-Hop’. Hip Hop and emotions [online].
1980s Crack Epidemic

crack epidemic, the significant increase in the use of crack cocaine, or crack, in the United States during the early 1980s. Crack cocaine was popularized because of its affordability, its immediate euphoric effect, and its high profitability. The crack epidemic had particularly devastating effects within the African American communities of the inner cities by causing the increase of addictions, deaths, and drug-related crimes.

A small-time drug dealer who sold crack daily earned a median net income of $2,000 per month. The increase in the demand for crack cocaine caused intense competition between drug dealers as they fought to profit from the same customers. Consequently, violence became linked to crack cocaine as these small-time drug dealers defended their economic boundaries.

BRITANNICA. 2021. ‘Drug Abuse’. Britannica [online].
